ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Larry Long hit a two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning, rallying the University of Maryland to a 3-2 win over host Elon College on Sunday afternoon, and a sweep of the three-game weekend series.
Three Maryland batters drew walks off Elon pitchers Chris Hughes and Nathan Holcomb to load the bases with two out in the top of the eighth. Long then delivered a two-out single to right field to score Brian Patenaude and Jason Mohap, giving the Terrapins a 3-2 lead.
Elon squandered chances in its final two at-bats to rally. Brian Kane grounded into an inning-ending double play in the eighth, while Jason Tuttle struck out to end the game, stranding Chris Maggi on second base.
The Fightin' Christians (1-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Whit Bryant scored on a throwing error by Maryland shortstop Casey Trout. The Terrapins (3-3) tied the score at 1-1 in the third, as Eric Beer scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Swope.
Elon regained the lead at 2-1 in the fifth inning, when Jason Tuttle scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Bryant.
Maryland starter Jamie Hammond (1-1) earned the win, going 7.0 innings while allowing four walks and posting three strikeouts. Jared Vogt pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season. Elon starter Chris Hughes (0-2) suffered the loss despite a six-hit, 10-strikeout performance over 7.1 innings.
