HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Terps rebounded from a tough loss against Navy to defeat James Madison, 31-17, on Jan. 16. Once again, Maryland fell behind early, but captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa.) and freshman Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) responded with pins in the second and third matches of the afternoon. In addition, redshirt freshman Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.), at 133 pounds, and Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.), at 125, continued their impressive seasons with convincing wins. Other winners for the Terps included 184-pound redshirt freshman Bill Moore (Silver Spring, Md.) and 197-pound junior Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J.). York, Guzzio and Harlan were the only Terp winners on Wednesday as Maryland fell to the Navy Midshipmen, 33-9. The trio has compiled a 7-2 dual record this year.
MARYLAND HOSTS NC STATE ON FRIDAY NIGHT
The Terps open up the ACC regular season on Friday night as NC State comes to Ritchie Coliseum for a dual meet beginning at 7:30 p.m. Last year, the Wolfpack won the last two matches to come from behind and win, 22-16. The two teams match up very well at the lower weights especially in the Joe Guzzio-Lee Carroll match at 125 pounds. Carroll (No. 16), Tommy Davis (No. 16 at 141) and Kevin Boross (No. 18 at 174) are all ranked by Amateur Wrestling News.
YORK WINS ACC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
York and Virginia senior Matt Roth shared last weeks ACC Wrestler of the Week honors after finishing their respective weeks undefeated. York, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, won all four of his matches to win the 133-pound division at the Millersville Invitational. The title is his third consecutive first-place finish. He has also won the Coppin and Penn State opens.
MILLERSVILLE RESULTS
Brandon York and Joe Guzzio each took first in their divisions as Maryland finished 13 points behind Binghamton (SUNY) at the Millersville Invitational to claim second in the team standings last Saturday. Ted Harlan, at 149 pounds, and freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.), at 141, finished second, but posted very strong wins in their earlier matches.
MARYLAND COACH JOHN McHUGH
Marylands John McHugh (Maryland 59) is in his 21st season at the helm of the Terrapin wrestling program.
