BALTIMORE, Md.--Senior captain Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa.) was one of five winning Terp wrestlers as Maryland held off Coppin State, 19-16, in its first dual match of the season. Harlan, who has won five of his last six duals dating back to last January, defeated Matt Jewer, 4-3. The Terps have never lost to the Eagles in wrestling.
Other winners for the Terrapins included junior Mike Tomaino (Allenhurst, N.J.), redshirt freshmen Rob Booth (Atco, N.J.) and Bill Moore (Silver Spring, Md.), and true freshman Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.), who won by forfeit. Tomainos 10-0 major decision turned out to be the critical win, giving Maryland a nine-point lead heading into the final matches.
On the downside for the Terps, Coppin senior Omar Mann handed redshirt freshman Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) the first loss of his collegiate career, snapping his eight-match win streak.
TERPS TAKE BREAK FOR HOLIDAY SEASON; RETURN FOR TOUGH WINTER SCHEDULE
Winter vacation is very short for the Terrapin wrestling team as they return for the Wilkes Open on Dec. 28 and then face a demanding January schedule. On Jan. 9, the Terps compete in the Millersville Invitational, a tournament that they have won for the past two seasons. Next, they have a string of five dual meets against prominent opponents. The Terps posted a 2-4 record during the long stretch last year.
YORK WINS PENN STATE OPEN; WEIDMAN AND GUZZIO HAVE STRONG SHOWING
Brandon York continued his preseason dominance by taking the 133-pound title at the Penn State Open. He improved his personal record to 8-0 and became the first Terp since All-American Jim Guzzio, in 1996, to win the prestigious tournament. York also won the Coppin Open on Nov. 7.
Also having a strong showing, sophomore Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) placed in his third consecutive tournament by finishing second at 165 pounds and sophomore Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) rounded out the Terrapin performances by finishing sixth at 125 pounds.
MARYLAND COACH JOHN McHUGH
Marylands John McHugh (Maryland 59) is in his 21st season at the helm of the Terrapin wrestling program. During his tenure, he has twice been named ACC Coach of the Year (1990 and 1993) and received a Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a Terp wrestler, McHugh was a two-time ACC champion and a three-time NCAA qualifier. In his time in College Park, McHugh has coached seven All-Americans and 19 ACC champions.
