Cirovski's First Terp Recruiting Class Looks Good

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Shannon Cirovski, the University of Maryland's first-year head women's soccer coach, has announced her first recruiting class. The class includes Valarie Lawrence, the 1999 All-Met Player of the Year by the Washington Post and Carly Viher, the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Ohio.

In addition to Lawrence (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and Viher (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Cirovski received national letters of intent from Lindsay Givens (Downington, Pa/Downington Senior), Sally Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville), Dana Jarzyneicki (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) and Kim King (Media, Pa./Strath Haven).

In addition to her All-Met honors, Lawrence earned all-district and all-conference honors following her senior season. She scored 83 goals and had 41 assists during her career. The midfielder/striker was a member of the State of Maryland Olympic Development team from 1994-98.

Viher, the 1998 State of Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year, was a four-year varsity co-captain on defense and as a midfielder. She led Mentor the four consecutive district championships and into the state championship semifinals in both 1996 and 1997. She was named the most outstanding senior athlete in 1998 and finished her career as the school's eighth leading scorer. Viher was an All-Lake County first team selection and a Times News Herald All-Star choice in 1997.

Givens, a defender, was an All-State and All-East first team selection as a senior. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the State Cup Championships as well as MVP of her state and regional teams. Givens was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Olympic Development Program for six years and was a member of the U.S. Region I Olympic Development team from 1995-97.

Harrison led Kempsville to the state championship tournament finals in both 1996 and 1997 as a defender. She was an All-Beach honorable mention selection following her senior season and led her club team, the Beach FC Riptides, to the state championship in 1997. Harrison also led the Riptides to the championship game of the 1997 Orange Bowl tournament and has been a member of the state of Virginia ODP since 1994. She was also an All-Region first team, All-Beach first team and All-Tidewater first team selection. Scholastically, Harrison was an All-Region Academic team selection

Jarzyneicki earned All-Greater Rochester second team honors and was named the Section Five Class BB most valuable offensive player in 1997. The midfielder/striker participated in the Empire State games in 1997 and was named to the Who's Who Among High School Students as a senior in 1998. Was an All-State first team selection in 1998 and was honored as the Aquinas Institute scholar-athlete of the year following her senior season.

King was named the Most Valuable Player of the State Cup finals in 1995 and 1997 and led her high school team in scoring for three consecutive years, 1995 1996 and 1997. A midfielder/striker, King was a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Olympic Development team from 1992-1998 and is currently a member of the U.S. Region I pool.

"We are very pleased to have attracted such a talented group of recruits who make up our first recruiting class at Maryland," said Cirovski, who was named the Terps' head coach on Jan. 13. "We are going to continue the excellent tradition of the women's soccer program here at Maryland and take it to a higher level."
