COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After pulling out tight victories against American and Duke last week, the Terps now have their greatest challenge at hand. In a period of only six days, Maryland will host three of its toughest competitors and hope to come out on top each time. Last year, Maryland topped both Howard and Old Dominion, but lost 30-9 against an always talent-filled Virginia squad. If the Terps defeat the Cavaliers, it will be the teams best finish in the conference since 1995. This weekend also marks the end to the regular season for the Terps. After the Old Dominion match on Sunday, Maryland will be idle until the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Virginia on March 6.
TERPS TAKE OVER SECOND PLACE IN THE ACC WITH WIN AT DUKE
Despite winning four of the 10 weight classes on Feb. 12, Maryland came away with a team victory, posting a 20-19 win over ACC rival Duke. The Terrapins earned two pins, at 125 and 157, to put the match out of reach for the Blue Devils.
After the Terps fell behind 7-3, Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) came back at 125 to pin Duke's Brijal Padia at a time of 2:07 to make the score 9-7. The Blue Devils earned decisions at both 133 and 141 to take the lead at 13-9 with four weight classes to go, but the Terrapins secured the match with an 18-1 victory at 149 when Maryland's Ted Harlan (Glenmore, Pa.) defeated Bill West. That was followed by a pin by Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) to make the score 20-13.
THREE FORFEITS HELPS MARYLAND SOAR ABOVE EAGLES
Maryland took advantage of the injury-riddled Eagles as the Terps topped American, 27-18, at Bender Arena. Maryland captured 18 points off three forfeits as freshmen Jake Stork, Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Sal Aquia (Baltimore, Md.) all went unchallenged. Redshirt freshman Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) opened the scoring for the Terps at 133 pounds with a fall in 2:18 over Victor Acquaah-Harrison. Junior heavyweight Jule Dolci (Columbus, N.J.) topped Eagle senior Dan Schutte with a takedown in the final period, 4-0. American was undefeated in seven straight home matches dating back to last season.
MARYLAND COACH JOHN McHUGH
Marylands John McHugh (Maryland 59) is in his 21st season at the helm of the Terrapin wrestling program. During his tenure, he has twice been named ACC Coach of the Year (1990 and 1993) and received a Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a Terp wrestler, McHugh was a two-time ACC champion and a three-time NCAA qualifier. In his time in College Park, McHugh has coached seven All-Americans and 19 ACC champions.
