END OF SEASON
1997-98 SEASON RECAP: The Terps came into this season after losing half of their starting lineup to graduation. To compensate for the loss, head coach John McHugh brought in one of his all-time top recruiting classes. Senior tri-captains Craig Garrison, Shane Mack and Jeff Whalen also stepped up as they combine to win over 70 percent of their matches. Whalen had a stellar year as he earned his second NCAA bid and he was named ACC Performer of the Week twice during the season. He also won both the Millersville and Congressional Cup titles. Mack, the Terps' other NCAA qualifier, will head to the tournament for his third consecutive year. While the seniors held their own all season, the freshmen also made their mark. Joe Guzzio, whose older brother Jim was an All-America for the Terps in '97, made an immediate impact as he won his first seven matches. His streak included back-to-back third place finishes at the West Virginia and East Stroudsburg opens in November. At 134 lbs., junior Ted Harlan posted an 8-2 dual record on way to 18 wins. While injuries hampered the Terps at the two heaviest weights, freshmen Mark Mansueto (126), Josh Weidman (158) and Chad Masemer made strides in their respective divisions.
TWO TERPS QUALIFY FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Senior co-captains Jeff Whalen and Shane Mack qualified for the NCAA Tournament with strong performances at the ACCs this past weekend. Whalen, at 150 pounds, qualified by reaching the finals of the tournament, while Mack earned a wild card spot after finishing third at 142. For Whalen, it will be his second trip to the NCAA Tournament. This season, he took first place at both the Millersville Invitational and the Congressional Cup. He twice earned the ACC Performer of the Week award. This will be Mack's third consecutive trip to the NCAAs. Highlights from his season include a 9-2 dual record and second place at Millersville.
TERPS TAKE FIFTH AT ACCs AS WHALEN FINISHES SECOND: The Terps ended the season with a fifth place finish at the ACC Tournament on Saturday March 7. Senior Jeff Whalen was the lone Terp to make the finals, but he lost in the championship match to Virginia's Jim Harshaw, 4-0. Senior Shane Mack and junior Ted Harlan were the other Terps to have strong showings as they each battled back in the consolations finals. Mack defeated Jon Fret of Virginia 14-5 and Harlan won 7-4 over North Carolina's Josh Cowley. For Mack, it was his fourth consecutive ACC third place finish. Finishing in fourth place for Maryland was senior Craig Garrison and freshmen Joe Guzzio and Josh Weidman.
