Chapel Hill, N.C. - The University of North Carolina wrestling team won all 10 individual bouts to defeat Maryland, 40-0 on Jan. 30. By random draw, the match began at heavyweight as UNC freshman Matt Kenny got the Heels off to a quick start with a win by fall over Jule Dolci (Columbus, N.J.) in 4:46. In a much-anticipated match-up, All-America candidate Chuckie Connor increased Carolina's lead to 11-0 after two matches with a technical fall over Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) in 6:50. The Tar Heels won the remaining eight matches for the sweep.
On Thursday, Jan. 28 in Fairfax, Va., George Mason won four of the first five matches and held off a Maryland rally for a 24-13 victory. Maryland rallied to win the next two matches as Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored a 16-5 major decision at 133 and Bryan Robinovitz (Belle Mead, N.J.) won a 12-6 decision at 141 to close the margin to 18-10, but Patriot Jason Grant broke through with a 7-4 decision at 149.
