COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Eric Beer lined a go-ahead RBI single to right to break a 5-5 deadlock in the sixth inning on Tuesday night at Shipley Field, and Chuck Easter added to the damage with a two-run homer to straightaway centerfield just one inning later. Mike D'Archangelo's bloop single scored a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as Maryland outlasted George Washington, 11-8, in college baseball action.
Just one out from defeat with runners on first and second, however, George Washington's Mike Bassett delivered a pinch-hit, three-run home run to momentarily cast doubt on the Terrapins victory party. Bassett's seventh homer of the season came off of reliever Jared Vogt, and was followed by a single by Ted Currle and a four-pitch walk to Matt Krimmel. Robert Ingwer, who represented the game-tying run, struckout looking to end the game.
The Terps (15-18-1) collected their second straight win by nearly breaking the game open in the late innings. Beer, a senior, singled and scored in the first inning, and doubled in the third before delivering the go-ahead blow in the sixth. His single through the hole between first and second base scored Brian Barton to help Maryland regain the lead at 6-5. Larry Long advanced to third on the hit, and scored on a double-steal attempt as Beer was retired going to second.
Beer finished 3-for-5 for the Terrapins, who host a pair of seven-inning games on Wednesday against Maryland-Eastern Shore. D'Archangelo, Craig Munroe and Jason Mohap each recorded two hits.
Maryland took its first lead on a three-run home run by Mohap with two out in the fifth. Mohap's third homer of the year countered a solo shot by GW rightfielder Chris Materese who staked the Colonials to a 4-2 lead in the visitors half of the fifth.
GW (22-20) scored a pair of runs early with a pair of walks, a double and a passed ball in the first inning. Beer got the Terrapins on the board to lead the home half of the first, but Ted Currle doubled and scored a half-inning later to match the Terps.
In the fourth, Mohap walked for Maryland and advanced to second on a single by Mike D'Archangelo. Barton's sacrifice bunt sent Mohap to third, and Long's groundout to short scored Mohap to pull the Terps within a run.
On the hill for the Terps, junior southpaw Jamie Hammond (3-2) worked six innings while scattering eight hits to record the win. Ray Wagner pitched two-plus innings of hitless relief, but couldn't close the door to record the first save of his career. Wagner hit a batter and walked another as Maryland coach Tom Bradley opted for bullpen help from Vogt with two out and two on in the ninth. Vogt watched his third pitch leave the park off the bat of Bassett before he struckout Ingwer three batters later to end the contest.
Chris Worth (0-1) allowed seven runs on just five hits for George Washington to absorb the loss.
