COLLEGE PARK, Md. - James Madison (21-30-1) broke open a scoreless tie with six runs in the top of the fourth inning, and went on to defeat Maryland (21-28-1) in baseball action tonight at Shipley Field.
Maryland starting pitcher Fred Weaver (Hummelstown, Pa.) retired the first nine batters, but the floodgates broke open in the fourth inning as the visiting Dukes sent 10 batters to the plate and bolted out to a 6-0 advantage. Right fielder Nate Turner and shortstop Dan Woodley each belted a two-run single, and first baseman Eric Bender and left fielder Steve Ballowe each had a RBI single.
The Terps struck back on a two-run home run by junior designated hitter Craig Munroe (Thornhill, Ontario) in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2. For Munroe, it was his team-leading 12th home run of the season, and his second in as many games.
James Madison, however, sealed the game on a two-run homer by third baseman Gregg Miller in the top of the fifth inning and a solo shot by center fielder Bryan Johnson in the top of the seventh inning. Catcher Kevin Razler added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI double.
For the Terps, senior shortstop Casey Trout (Gambrills, Md.) had a pair of doubles and scored twice. Senior left fielder Eric Beer (New City, N.Y.) had a pair of singles and recorded a RBI.
Righthander Nic Herr (2-5) went eight innings to get the win for James Madison. Weaver (1-3) took the loss for Maryland.
The Terps conclude their regular season with a three-game series against Wake Forest at Shipley Field this weekend. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
