STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State's 9th-ranked women's lacrosse team opened the season the hard way -- with four-time NCAA champion Maryland -- and lost 12-8 to the top-ranked Terrapins on a chilly afternoon at Bigler Field.
Maryland s also was playing its season opener but had shown it deserved the No. 1 ranking with a 12-8 win over the U.S. national team over the weekend.
Jen Adams of the Terps led all scorers with four goals and an assist and her teammates Kristin Sommar and Christie Jenkins each scored three goals.
Penn State's Colleen O'Brien tied a career high with three goals, all in the first half, to lead the Nittany Lions.
Maryland rocketed to a 5-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes before O'Brien put the Lions on the scoreboard. The Lions scored the next four goals and got as close as 7-6 before Sommar's second goal 25 seconds before the half created an 8-6 Terp advantage.
A pair of goal by Adams wrapped around another score by Sommar pushed Maryland into a 11-6 lead.
Emily Mechem had two solo goals for Penn State and Jenkins added another for Maryland to complete the scoring.
Penn State's defense, although allowing 12 goals, received a magnificent effort from first year starter in goal Megan Ames who had 20 saves. The sophomore from Alexandria, Va., drew raves from both coaches.
"She was fantastic," Penn State coach Julie Williams said. "I probably counted five or six goals that she saved."
"With the play of Megan Ames, they ought to enjoy a fine season," Terrapin coach Cindy Timchal suggested adding that there was one key factor in the game. "I thought that Jenkins and Sommar dominated the midfield." Penn State is idle until March 2 when the Lions will meet
Georgetown at Vanderbilt. Maryland's next game is at home on March 5 with Duke.
