RALEIGH, N.C. -- Junior lefthander Joe Hart scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings, and Jason Mohap belted a two-run double in the eighth inning to put the game away as Maryland defeated NC State 6-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action Sunday at Doak Field.
The Terrapins, who broke an eight-game losing streak in the series with the Wolfpack and an 11-game losing streak at Doak Field, improved to 14-17-1 overall and 5-9 in the ACC. With the loss, NC State fell to 29-15 overall and 7-8 in the conference. The Wolfpack was shut out at home for the first time since a 14-0 loss to Clemson on April 15, 1995.
Hart, who walked three and struck out five, improved to 3-4 with the win. Hart allowed just four runners to reach scoring position, and just one to advance as far as third base. The loss went to Wolfpack starter Rodney Ormond (4-4), who gave up just two runs, one of them unearned, on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
The Terps scored all the runs Hart would need with an unearned tally in the top of the second. Mohap led off and was hit by a pitch, went to second on Brian Barton's one-out single, and scored when Brian Ward's relay throw on a potential double-play ball went into the dugout.
Larry Long led off the top of the fifth with a triple off the wall in left field and scored on Eric Beer's sacrifice fly to the wall in center. Maryland broke the game open with a three-run eighth inning. Matt Swope led off with a single and Craig Munroe was hit by a pitch. Chuck Easter sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Mohap doubled to drive in both runs and give Hart a 4-0 lead. Mike D'Archangelo walked to put runners on first and second, and Long hit a big two-out RBI single to make it 5-0.
Hart nursed the shutout into the bottom of the eighth inning before giving way to reliever Todd Ainsworth, who retired six of the seven men he faced to close out the game. Munroe hit a homer to right field in the top of the ninth to give the Terps a 6-0 lead.
