DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke baseball team (15-16, 0-5 ACC) suffered a 12-5 ACC loss to Maryland (8-14-1, 1-5 ACC) on Friday at Jack Coombs Stadium.
The offensive star for the Terrapins was centerfielder Larry Long with a 4-for-5 day with three RBI and three runs scored. Maryland rightfielder Matt Swope was 3-for-5 on the afternoon with two RBI and two runs scored.
Maryland got out to a 3-1 lead after two innings, but the Blue Devils tied the score with two runs in the third. However, that would be all of the runs Duke would score off of Terrapin starting pitcher Tom Curtiss (2-2), who went five and two-thirds innings for the win. Maryland held Duke to just two runs over the final six innings.
Duke junior Vaughn Schill (Audubon, N.J.) provided the Duke offensive highlights with a 3-for-5 with a triple and a double with three runs scored and a RBI.
The loss went Duke senior hurler Stephen Cowie (Belmont, N.C.), who gave up six runs in six innings of work.
Duke and Maryland meet again on Saturday in a 1 pm start at Jack Coombs Field. Sunday's final game, also slated for a 1 pm start, will broadcast on a tape-delay basis on the Home Team Sports/Fox SportsSouth.
