Maryland Splits Doubleheader with Delaware

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior pitcher Kristi O'Connell struck out eight and pitched her fourth shutout of the season to lead Delaware to a 1-0 victory over Maryland in the first game of a college softball doubleheader and Kelly Shipman struck out seven and allowed only one hit as the Terps won the second game, 5-0, at the North Fields Softball Complex here Friday.
Maryland's record is now 29-17 while Delaware moves to 17-7. The Terps are ranked 30th in the latest USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll. The Terps' 29 victories this season ranks as the second highest single-season victory total in the five-year history of the program.
Delaware scored the only run of the first game in the seventh inning. Senior third baseman Robin Zielinski tripled to right after Terps' starter Amanda Bettker had retired the first two batters of the inning. Sophomore shortstop Carolyn Wasilewski then singled up the middle to drive home Zielinski with the game-winning run.
O'Connell retired the Terps in order in the bottom of the seventh to gain the victory. Her record is now 8-3. O'Connell retired seven of the final eight batters she faced. Maryland's Bettker absorbed the loss despite striking out eight and allowing only five hits.
Maryland won the second game as Shipman was two-for-two at the plate with a single and her fourth home run of the season in the second inning. She had two RBI and scored two runs in the game. In addition to striking out seven and allowing only one hit she retired 15 of the final 18 batters she faced. Her record is now 15-10.
Maryland's Cortney Madea hit her fourth home run of the season in the third inning of the second game.
The Terps play host to Towson Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
