Sept. 20, 1999
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With an impressive come-from-behind 4-3 overtime
victory over No. 9 Duke on Sunday, the Maryland women's soccer team will
have a chance to upend another ranked team as the Terps host No. 13
James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Ludwig Field.
Maryland sophomore forward Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) scored
the first two goals of her collegiate career including the game-winner
in the 98th minute to lift the Terps past the Blue Devils on Sunday. The
win was Maryland's first over a ranked team this year and the first for
new head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski over a Top 25 team at Maryland.
It was also Higgins-Cirovski's first ACC win.
Maryland Beats Ranked Blue Devils Again
Sunday's win was Maryland's third straight in the series against Duke
and in all three games, the Terps beat a Duke team which was ranked in
the top 10.
Two seasons ago in the ACC Tournament, Maryland topped Duke, when they
were ranked No. 9, on Nov. 7, 1997. Last season, the Terps beat a
then-No. 8 Duke team, 3-1 on Sept. 18, 1998. Now, this season, Maryland
defeated the Blue Devils when they were ranked No. 9.
The Series Against James Madison
Maryland holds a 7-3 overall advantage in the series against the Dukes
and has won the last five meetings. Maryland topped James Madison 1-0
last season in Harrisonburg, Va. on a goal by Keri Sarver off an assist
from Abby Bausman. In goal, Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.)
recorded one save for the shuout. The Terps have outscored the Dukes
13-3 over the last five meetings.
Maryland captured its first-ever NCAA Tournament game against James
Madison on Nov. 18, 1995 with a 6-1 win in College Park.
Similar to the Duke series, Maryland has defeated James Madison in each
of the last three games in which the Dukes entered the game as a ranked
team. Maryland defeated JMU, when it was ranked No. 13 in 1997, No. 22
in 1996 and No. 17 in 1995.
Mynarski Moving Up All-Time Charts
With the game-tying goal against Duke on Sunday, Jackie Mynarski
(Somers, N.Y.) now stands alone in eighth place on the Maryland all-time
goal scoring list with 17 career goals. She passed Stefanie Magro
(1991-94). Mynarski is also eighth on the all-time points list with 43,
just three points behind Audra Weber (1991-94) and ninth all-time in
assists with nine, behind Tania Sheremeta (1990-93) and Terri Rich
(1992-95).
Mynarski leads all Maryland players in points (nine) and goals (four)
this season.

Freshmen Draw Starting Nods
Shannon Higgins-Cirovski has depended heavily on freshmen and
sophomore-transfer Sara Gustafson (Reisterstown, Md.) this season. Six
different first-year players have started for the Terps in 1999. In
fact, over the Terps' first eight games, 55 percent of the starting
positions have been held by freshmen or Gustafson.
Leading the way for the freshmen starters have been defensive stalwarts
Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.), Carly Viher (Mentor, Ohio) and Sally
Harrison (Virginia Beach, Va.). The trio has started all eight games
this season.
Up front, Gustafson has started all six games along with midfielder
Valerie Lawrence. Kim King (Media, Pa.) has started the past four of the
past five games for Maryland.
King started her Maryland career on fire scoring in her first two
games. King is the first Maryland freshman to score in her first two
college games since Emmy Harbo scored in each of her two games in the
1995 season against Virginia Tech and George Mason.
Givens Tallies First College Point
Freshman Lindsay Givens is fast becoming known around the ACC her
incredible throw-ins but, the defender picked up her first college point
with a pass to Emily Janss for Maryland's first goal in Sunday's win
over Duke.
Overall, four different freshman have scored this season led by Kim
King (four points) and Valerie Lawrence (two points).
