New Maryland Coach Faces Old Maryland Coach
Wednesday's meeting with the Cavaliers will pit a pair of former North
Carolina stars on the field facing each other as coaches on opposite
sidelines. Maryland's Shannon Higgins-Cirovski will face former college
teammate and former Maryland coach April Heinrichs.
Higgins-Cirovski and Heinrichs played together for one season, 1986,
Higgins-Cirovski's freshmen campaign and Heinrichs' senior year. The Tar
Heels captured the national championship that season with a 24-0-1
record.
Heinrichs coached Maryland for five seasons from 1991 through 1995 before leaving for Virginia beginning the 1996 season. At Maryland, she compiled a 65-40-7 overall record. Heinrichs led the Terps to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1995 where Maryland defeated James Madison in its first tournament game to advance to the NCAA regional semifinals before falling to Portland.
Higgins-Cirovski (George Washington 1991-97) and Heinrichs (Maryland 1991-95 and Virginia 1996-97) have coached against each other seven times with each coach's team winning three times with one tie.

The Series Against Virginia
Maryland won its first-ever game in the series against Virginia last
season on Oct. 8, 1998, as Keri Sarver's goal 5:36 into the first
overtime lifted Maryland to a 3-2 win over the then-ranked No. 17
Cavaliers. Sarver also scored Maryland's first goal at 6:12 to tie the
game at 1-1 after Virginia's Liz Botta scored just 4:41 into the match.
Maryland's Emmy Harbo sent the game to overtime at 2-2 as she scored
with 18:38 left in regulation off a pass from Sarver.
Riki-Ann Serrins (Mission Viejo, Calif.) recorded the win in goal,
making six saves in 95:36 of action.
Overall, Virginia holds a 14-1-2 lead in the series that dates back to 1987, Maryland's first varsity season. Maryland has never won at Charlottesville, dropping seven straight games, including the last game in 1997, 2-1.
Against Heinrichs, Maryland has a 1-1-1 record, tying the Cavaliers 1-1 in 1996, losing 2-1 in 1997 and winning last season.
The Series Against William & Mary Maryland and William & Mary have met 12 times since 1987 including an NCAA Tournament match in the second round of last season's event with the Tribe holding a 9-3 advantage. The Tribe defeated Maryland by identical 2-0 scores in last season regular season meeting on Oct. 16 and the NCAA tournament game on Nov. 15 held at Christopher Newport College in Newport News, Va.
The Terps last win over William & Mary came in 1995 as Maryland recorded a 1-0 win in College Park. Maryland also beat William & Mary in 1991 (3-1) and 1993 (2-1) both in College Park. The Terps have never won in Williamsburg, losing all five contests.
