Jan. 25, 2000
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 21 Maryland (13-5, 2-3 ACC), which has won two consecutive conference games, travels to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina at the Dean E. Smith Center. The Terps defeated Wake Forest (73-51, Jan. 19) and Clemson (74-62, Jan. 22) last week and have won seven of their last 10 games since Dec. 7. The Terps' game against the Tar Heels is their first road game since Jan. 15 when they played Georgia Tech in Atlanta and is the first of a two game road swing. Maryland travels to Tallahassee to face Florida State (Jan. 29, 1:30 p.m.) before playing at home on Feb. 2 against Virginia.
Look For Maryland To...
- Win its third consecutive ACC game and even its conference record at 3-3,
- Win its second consecutive game at the Smith Center for the second time in five years. Maryland also won back-to-back games in Chapel Hill during the 1996 and 1997 seasons,
- Win at North Carolina for the fourth time in the last five years.
Morris Approaches 500 Career Rebounds
Junior All-American Terence Morris (Frederick, Md.) needs only one
rebound to become the 29th player in school history to grab 500
rebounds. He enters Wednesday night's game against North Carolina with
499 rebounds in 83 career games for a 6.0 rebounds per game average
during his career. Only 19 players in school history have reached the

500-rebound plateau.
Fastest To 1,000 Points/500 Rebounds
Junior All-American Terence Morris needs only one rebound to become the
23rd player in school history to score 1,000 career points and grab 500
rebounds. He scored his 1,000th career point against Duke on Jan. 9 and
needs only one rebound to reach the 500-rebound plateau. Morris will
play in his 84th career game against North Carolina on Wednesday.
Should Morris reach the 500-rebound mark against the Tar Heels, he will
become the 10th fastest player in school history to reach the
combination milestone.

Clemson in place of Terence Morris and scored 12 points and grabbed a

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Max Owens powered several key runs and 15th-ranked North Carolina earned a shot at a third straight ACC championship with an 86-79 victory over No. 5 Maryland. Third-seeded North Carolina shot 53 percent, including a 9-of-16 performance from 3-point range, and held off a late rally by second-seeded Maryland. The Terrapins cut a 23-point deficit to four. Maryland used an 18-6 run in the last eight minutes to help trim North Carolina's lead to 78-74 with 47 seconds remaining. But Owens helped the Tar Heels seal it by making all six of his free throws the rest of the way. Owens, a sophomore guard, finished with a career-high 23 points. Ademola Okulaja added 19, Jason Capel 13 and Brendan Haywood 10. Steve Francis scored 31 to lead Maryland. seasons. He is also one of only two coaches in school history to have
directed his first two teams to winning records and to a regular season
conference championship during the first six years at the helm.
Williams Becomes A Grandfather
Gary Williams knew it would be close. His daughter Kristin and her
husband Geoff were expecting their first baby, and the due date was
right around the date of the Terps' season opener. Coach Williams was in
Ohio on Nov. 15 for the birth of his grandson, David Geoffrey Scott,
before returning to College Park to collect his 400th career win on Nov.
17. Both the mother and child are doing well.
