WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Senior designated hitter Craig Munroe belted a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, leading Maryland (16-25, 1-12 ACC) to a 4-2 upset of No. 10 Wake Forest (33-13-1, 12-7 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Friday at Hooks Stadium. The game marked the first of a three-game ACC series between the two schools.
The Terps were trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth inning and were down to their last two outs. With one out, and no one on base, sophomore outfielder Matt Swope and junior third baseman Steve Oursler each singled, setting the stage for Munroe's heroics. With the count at 1-and-2, Munroe launched his 10th home run of the season over the right-center field fence.
Junior outfielder Brian Patenaude led off the game with a home run to left field. It marked the first time a Maryland player homered to lead off a game since former Terp Eric Beer did the same against Duke on April 4, 1999.
Wake Forest came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Shortstop Chase Voshell led of the inning with a triple and first baseman Danny Borrell followed with a home run to left field. It was his 11th home run of the season.
Maryland starting pitcher Joe Hart went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. He also recorded four strikeouts and walked only one batter. Wake Forest starter Eric Schmitt went 8.0, inning allowing just one hit on Patenaude's home run.
Mark Martin came in for Hart and retired the final four batters of the game, raising his record to 2-4. David Bush (2-3) took the loss.
The Terps and Deacons resume their series on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
