Freshman catcher Troy Caradonna went 3-for-3 with three RBI, leading Duke (16-37, 5-17 ACC) to an 8-5 win over Maryland (22-32, 5-17 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Thursday at Shipley Field. The game marked the first of a three-game conference series between the two squads.
Caradonna smacked a two-run single into center field in the top of the second inning, giving Duke a 2-0 lead. Senior third baseman Jeff Becker hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning, extending the lead to 3-0.
Senior designated hitter Craig Munroe pulled the Terps to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run home run. Junior right fielder David Mason, however, singled home two runs in the top of the sixth inning, giving the Blue Devils a 5-2 advantage.
In the top of the eighth inning, Caradonna struck again, doubling home a run to put the Blue Devils in the lead 6-2. Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude, however, cut the deficit to 6-5 with a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Duke added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman first baseman Larry Broadway singled home a run, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.
Sophomore righthander Patrick Hannaway (2-5) got the win while junior righthander Mark Martin (2-6) took the loss. Senior righthander Brad DuPree got his team-leading fifth save of the season.
Senior center fielder Larry Long and junior shortstop Sean Lomas each had three hits for the Terps while sophomore catcher Kevin McDonald had a pair of hits. Becker had three hits for the Blue Devils, including two doubles to go along with his home run.
The two schools resume their series Friday at 7 p.m.
