
Maryland Baseball Team Beats Duke 6-3

Junior shortstop Sean Lomas drilled a three-run home run, leading Maryland (23-32, 6-17 ACC) to a 6-3 win over Duke (16-38, 6-17 ACC) in ACC baseball action on Friday at Shipley Field. The game marked the second of a three-game conference series between the two squads.
Junior left fielder Brian Patenaude got the Terps on the board in the third inning when he tripled and stole home on a wild pitch. Duke sophomore Kevin Kelly tied the score in the top of the fifth inning when he hit a two-out solo home run over the left field fence.
Lomas keyed a five-run fifth inning with a three-run home run to left field. It was his third home run in the past four games. Junior third baseman Steve Oursler followed with a RBI double and senior center fielder Larry Long singled home a run, giving the Terps a 6-2 lead.
Freshman catcher Ryan Caradonna of Duke drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning, cutting the lead to 6-2. Sophomore shortstop Kevin Kelly scored on a ground out in the top of the seventh inning, cutting the lead to 6-3.
Senior righthander Jamie Hammond (6-8) went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to get the win. Freshman lefthander Larry Broadway (1-1) took the loss. Freshman righthander Jared Stuart got his first career save.
The two schools conclude their series Saturday at 1 p.m.
