COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland routed Duke 59-17 on Saturday to earn its seventh straight win and amass 697 yards in total offense. The Terps recorded 34 first downs, 362 yards rushing and 335 passing. Following are game notes as the unbeaten Terrapins look ahead to next week's showdown at Florida State.
* With today's 59-17 win over Duke, Maryland (#12 AP, #14 ESPN/USA Today) moves to 7-0 for the first time since 1978 (the '78 Terps opened with eight straight wins). The Terps are now 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, winning their most conference games since 1985 when they won the ACC with a 6-0 mark.
* Maryland's seven wins are its most since 1985. In that season, the Terps finished 9-3, won the ACC and beat Syracuse in the Cherry Bowl.
* Maryland now leads the all-time series with the Blue Devils, 27-18, and has won eight of the last 10 meetings.
* With Maryland's win today, Ralph Friedgen becomes the only head coach in the 109-year history of the Maryland program to start his career with seven straight wins. H.C. "Curley" Byrd opened his career with six straight (two at the end of 1911 and four straight to open the 1912 season).
* Terrapin punter Brooks Barnard ran out the clock with his only punt of the day, as time expired to end the game. Had he not punted, it would have marked just the second time in history that Maryland was never forced to punt. The only time the Terrapins have not punted in a game was during a 62-24 win over Virginia on Nov. 22, 1975.
* Maryland's 59 points was the second-largest point total in the Terps' ACC history. The only other ACC game in which Maryland scored more than 59 points was the 62-24 win over Virginia in 1975.
* Maryland ran 90 plays for 697 yards against the Blue Devils. The last time that Maryland amassed over 600 yards total offense was against Virginia Tech in 1993 (649 yards).
* The Terrapins finished with 34 first downs on the day, one shy of the school-record mark of 35 first downs, against Virginia in 1975 and again against Clemson in 1984.
* Maryland's balance on offense was exhibited by 362 yards rushing and 335 passing. The Terps recorded 17 first downs rushing, and 17 passing.
* Five different Maryland players scored rushing touchdowns today with Shaun Hill and Marc Riley scoring two apiece. Maryland's first four rushing scores were by four different players: Shaun Hill, Bruce Perry, James Lynch and Marc Riley. Tight end Jeff Dugan caught a 4-yard TD pass from Hill, and backup QB Latrez Harrison added a six-yard TD run late in the game.
* Eleven different Maryland receivers caught passes today. Leading the way were Bruce Perry (6-62), Matt Murphy (5-70) and Guilian Gary (4-53).
* Shaun Hill had his best day as a Terrapin in today's game. The senior from Parsons, Kan., completed 26-of-32 passes for a career-high 323 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for a career high 105 yards and two touchdowns, besting his previous career high of 47 rushing yards. All told, Hill accounted for 425 yards of total offense.
* Today was a big day for the Maryland tight ends as the duo of Matt Murphy and Jeff Dugan accounted for seven receptions and 92 yards. Dugan's second quarter touchdown was the first by a Terp tight end this year, but Murphy -- honored as a team captain for the first time in his career today -- had the big day with career highs in catches (5) and yards (70).
* Terrapin tailback Bruce Perry rushed 13 times for 79 yards in limited duty against the Blue Devils. He also caught six passes for 62 yards.
* Maryland and Terrapin placekicker Nick Novak tied a school record with eight PATs in Saturday's game.
* Maryland's attendance today was 43,528. It marks the first time since 1983 Maryland has opened its season with five-straight home games with an attendance of 40,000 or more.
