GREENSBORO, Md. - Maryland seniors Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon joined a trio of Duke all-stars on the 2001-02 All-Atlantic Coast Conference preseason squad as voted on by the attending media at the Conference's 40th annual Operation Basketball held Sunday, October 28, at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Jason Williams, a 6-2, 195-pound junior from Duke was the media's unanimous choice as the preseason ACC Player of the year, receiving all 74 votes. Williams was a consensus first-team All-America selection as a sophomore a year ago, after becoming the first Blue Devil since Danny Ferry in 1989 to lead the ACC in scoring with a 21.6 points per game average. The Plainfield, N.J., product led Duke and was second in the ACC in assists (6.2) and was the only player to rank among the top 20 nationally in scoring (15th) and assists (19th).
Joining Williams on the media pre-season first-team were the Terps' Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter -- who followed him in second and third in the balloting -- and Duke teammates Mike Dunleavy and Carlos Boozer.
Dixon led the Terps and was fifth in the ACC in scoring (18.2) a year ago and has earned first-team All-ACC honors in each of the past two seasons while Baxter earned second-team All-ACC recognition last year after averaging 15.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Dunleavy earned honorable mention All-ACC honors after averaging 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds as a sophomore in 2000-01. Boozer was also an honorable mention All-ACC performer last season averaging 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds.
