COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Tonight's exhibition basketball game marks the start of Johnny Holliday's 23rd year as the play-by-play "Voice of the Terps" for the Maryland basketball team. Earlier this fall, Holliday began the school year with a four-year contract extension that ensures his position at Maryland through the 2004-05 season.
Holliday, who is in his 18th year doing coast-to-coast morning sports with the ABC Radio Network, boasts a long list of announcing credits including coverage of numerous Summer and Winter Olympics, championship boxing, the Masters golf tournament, and the Liberty and Aloha bowls. He also is in his 23rd season carrying Maryland football on the Terrapins' radio network.
"It is a great opportunity that we have to keep Johnny on board with us for four more years," said Yow. "Johnny has become synonymous with Maryland Athletics, and his tremendous service and outstanding talent certainly are instrumental in the continued promotion of our teams throughout the region."
Said Holliday, who also hosts TV coaches shows with football coach Ralph Friedgen and men's basketball coach Gary Williams, "I'm thrilled to continue my 23rd year at the University of Maryland. It's great to see this program continue to develop, and working with the Maryland coaches and staff has provided some of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. It is great to see Ralph [Friedgen] back here, and I'm excited to see the football program returning to the success it had during his earlier days. And working with Gary [Williams] and his program has just been phenomenal. This is the ideal job."
Since the 1979 football campaign, Holliday has called Terrapin sports action throughout the Washington and Baltimore radio markets. Outside of his many broadcasting accomplishments, he has been recognized throughout the Washington metro area for his work in raising money for charity and is a past honoree as Washingtonian of the Year, as awarded by Washingtonian magazine.
Also an award-winning actor, Holliday recently starred as the lead character in the University of Maryland's production of Music Man, the debut theater production for the school's new 318,000-square-foot Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
