COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland hosts William & Mary on Thursday, hoping to get back to its winning ways following a 72-56 loss last Friday at No. 21 Oklahoma. Tipoff from Cole Field House is 8 p.m. A sellout crowd is expected. The game will be also be televised live on Comcast Sports Net, with George Johnson and Glenn Consor calling the action.
The Terps welcome the Tribe to Cole Field House with their 82-game non-conference homecourt win streak still intact. Only one more non-league game can threaten the streak before Maryland moves to the Comcast Center next season: next Thursday against Norfolk State (8 p.m.)
OU Recap: Maryland battled Oklahoma to a 36-34 halftime deficit last week before succumbing to the Sooners' outstanding athleticism and the possible effects of a 10-day layoff for first semester exams, falling 72-56. It was the Terrapins' first game on an opponent's home floor this season, and resulted in their lowest scoring game since falling to Kentucky in the Preseason NIT in 1999. Maryland limited OU to 40.3 percent shooting, but the Terps shot just 38.6 percent themselves and were outrebounded 44-36. Maryland turned the ball over 21 times and a season-long trait remained true: when Maryland has been whistled for more fouls, the Terps are 0-2. Maryland is 8-0 when committing fewer fouls than its opponent.
12 Years: Maryland's 82-game non-conference win streak at Cole spans to 1989, in Gary Williams' first season in College Park. The Terps last loss to a non-league foe at Cole on Dec. 11, 1989, against Coppin State. The streak began on Dec. 30, 1989 against Alcorn State. A win against the Tribe ensures the Terps at least 12 full years since they last lost a non-league game on their home floor.
Changing The Calendar: Through five games in December, the Terps have shot 78.4 percent (91-of-116) from the free throw stripe. Through five games in November, the Terps had shot just 53.4 percent (63-of-118) from the free throw line.
Player Notes: Sophomore forward Chris Wilcox has made his presence felt in the Terps' last seven games, coming off the bench to combine for 79 points (11.3) and 62 rebounds (8.9). He led the Terps in scoring for the first time in his career with 15 points at OU ... At OU, Juan Dixon finished with just 11 points, below his team-leading 17.7 average ... however, it was the 76th time in his last 81 games that he has scored in double figures ... Lonny Baxter had nine points and 10 rebounds at Oklahoma, just missing the 27th double-double of his career ... Baxter now needs just 27 points to become the 14th player in Maryland history to reach 1,500 career points ... Baxter's first rebound against William & Mary will make him the ninth player in Terrapin history to register 800 career rebounds ...
49th Season In ACC: The Terps travel to NC State on Sunday to begin the 49th season of basketball in the Atlantic Coast Conference ... Sunday's game can be seen live on FOX Sports Net (locally on Comcast SportsNet), beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
