COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Welcome to "In The Paint," a feature item on umterps.com that gives fans an "inside" perspective on the lives and minds of Maryland basketball players.
Today, Maryland Basketball GameDay's Doug Drabik goes in the paint with Terp sophomore Chris Wilcox. They discuss last season's Final Four, and the Cole Field House memories to be made this year.
GameDay: Who is your biggest role model?
Chris Wilcox: My mom. She's been a real inspiration in my life.
GD: Do you feel that you learned anything playing with Terence Morris and Mike Mardesich last season?
CW: I learned a lot. Playing in the post against both those guys everyday in practice really helped me work on my low-post moves. They helped me become a better all-around player.
GD: What is your favorite memory about Cole Field House?
CW: Since I've only played here one year, I don't have too many memories yet. But my favorite memory about Cole Field House would be when I started against Florida State and getting introduced to the crowd. That felt great - it was such a rush. I felt like I was a hero. It was nice to hear the crowd chant my name.
GD: What was the Final Four like outside of the game itself?
CW: It was very exciting. The atmosphere surrounding the Final Four was special.
GD: Were you nervous stepping onto the court in Minneapolis at the Final Four last year?
CW: I just took it like another game. I didn't let the pressure and all the excitement get to me. I went out there thinking we had to win another game to move on.
GD: Why did you change your haircut to cornrows?
CW: I wanted to try something new. I just felt like I needed something different so I decided to try cornrows.
GD: What are your goals this season?
CW: I want to work hard and give 110 percent every day. I feel if I work hard every day in practice, it will pay off during game time.
GD: What did you do over the summer?
CW: I worked on improving my game and took a class over the summer here at Maryland. I spent a lot of my time here at Maryland during the summer.
