Maryland vs. Detroit: Postgame Notes

Dec. 9, 2001

Recap| Box Score

  • Maryland's 79-54 victory gives the Terps' (No. 2 USA Today/ESPN/No. 3 AP) their seventh win in a row, marking the fifth time that a Gary Williams Maryland team has strung together seven or more victories. The Terrapins have not tasted defeat since their season-opening loss to now-No. 8/7 Arizona and have won 17 of their last 20 dating to the 2000-01 season. (The Terps maintained their all-time high No. 2 spot in Sunday evening's USA Today/ESPN Poll.)

  • The win extends Maryland's national-leading non-conference home court win streak to 81. The streak began almost 12 years ago on Dec. 30, 1989, with a 110-91 Terp win over Alcorn State.

  • Maryland shot 16-for-31 (.516) from the field in the first half vs. Detroit's 8-for-28 performance (.286). The Terrapins' 17-point lead (40-23) at the half marked the second-largest of the season. Maryland led American University 48-23 (25 points) at intermission on Nov. 17 of this season at Cole Field House. Maryland held Detroit to .308 shooting for the game, marking the 16th time in the last 17 games that a Terp opponent has been kept below 44% shooting. Twelve of Maryland's last 17 opponents have failed to shoot better than 40% from the field.

  • Four Terrapins -- Lonny Baxter (game-high 17), Tahj Holden (14), Byron Mouton (13) and Juan Dixon (12) -- scored in double-figures, marking the third time this season that the Terrapins have had as many double-digit scorers.

  • The Terrapins got the better of the Titans on the boards, 39-34. The Terps are 5-0 when outrebounding opponents and 2-1 when trailing an opponent in rebounding this season.

  • Maryland scored 36 points in the paint, vs. 20 by Detroit. Maryland's bench outscored Detroit's by a 30-12 margin. Maryland is 6-0 on the season when its bench outscores an opponent's.

  • Senior forward/center Lonny Baxter finished with 17 points to lead the Terps in scoring for the third straight game. Baxter has hit 13 of his last 15 (.867) free throws after beginning the season 20-of-41 (.488) in the first six games.

  • Senior guard/forward Byron Mouton hit his first two field goals and finished with a season-high 13 points (5-of-7 (.714)) after missing the week of practice to attend funeral proceedings for his brother in Rayne, La. It was his best shooting day since Feb. 14, 2001 against Florida State in Cole Field House and marked the fourth game at Maryland where he shot 71% or better from the field.

  • Mouton came off the bench for the first time since "Senior Day" against Virginia on March 3, 2001. Then-senior LaRon Cephas started in Mouton's place in the last game in Cole Field House for Cephas, Mike Mardesich and Terence Morris. Maryland is now 3-4 with Mouton playing in a reserve role since his Terp career began in 2000-01.

  • Mouton's 13 points mark his fourth double-digit performance of the season and first time in double-figures since Nov. 17 against American. He began the season with double-figures in the first three games and reached double-digits again on Sunday.

  • Junior forward/center Tahj Holden put forth a solid all-around effort on Sunday against the Titans. He contributed a career-high six blocked shots to go along with 14 points (5-of-9 (.556), 2-of-3 (.667) from 3-point range). Holden's six blocks by halftime eclipsed his previous high of five, which he registered against Clemson on Jan. 22 of last season. He has scored 29 points in his last two games, after totaling 28 points in the first six games of the season.

  • Senior guard Juan Dixon moved up on the ACC's all-time steals chart yet again, with three for the game to total 267 for his career. Dixon moves ahead of Duke's Shane Battier, who amassed 266 thefts from (1998-2001). Dixon also scored 12 points (6-of-10, .600) and matched a season-high with six rebounds.

  • Junior guard Drew Nicholas made his first career start against Detroit on Sunday. His line: 2-of-6 (.333) for six points.

  • Junior point guard Steve Blake did not score a point for the first time in his collegiate career, but chipped in with eight assists. Blake now moves into third place on the all-time Maryland assists chart, surpassing Terp great John Lucas' 514 career helpers from 1973-76. Blake's previous career-low in points was one (1) three times, most recently against Georgetown in the 2001 NCAA Tournament West Regional Semifinal.
