Postgame Quotes - Maryland Versus Clemson

Feb. 4, 2001

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Coach Gary Williams
Opening remarks:
"After you lose two, this is a good win because you don't have a lot of confidence. That's the way it goes and you have to get it back and that's the key during the season. To go through the tough times and to get your confidence back, and I thought we did out there as the game went on."

"We've got our feet back on the ground now and we've got to get ready for Georgia Tech -- not much time, about 48 hours."

"This game turned into a big game for us, and we played and got the win. I think we'll play better Tuesday night -- there's some things we can do better -- but we had to get through this game and get the win to [be able to] play better."

(on his team's defensive effort)
"Overall I though we were able to play good defense, especially on a guard as good as Will Solomon. We were able to do a good job against him."

(on Clemson's second-half run)
"Clemson made a very good run -- I guess it was to four -- and we were able to withstand that and get it out to where it wasn't too difficult at the end."

(on the early-season pressure on Terence Morris)
"Terence had to get through that (pressure to play well after deciding to return for his senior season). For his level, he didn't play particularly well early, and there were some questions about how good he really was. Since the conference play has started, I think he's shown how good he really is."

Clemson Coach Larry Shyatt
(on the effort of his team)
"I thought our effort and intensity was excellent. I thought we out-did them in every capacity that a team could to negate size, speed and inordinate talent."

(on his team's defensive performance)
"I thought we clawed hard on the defensive boards in the zone and thought we came up with a lot of loose balls."

(on cutting the Maryland lead to four in the second half)
"We wanted to run some clock to make them guard us a little longer and shorten the game when it was at an eleven or twelve-point (Maryland lead), we felt we were three or four possessions away. At the same time, we were eligible for the bonus early and we wanted to have Will (Soloman) draw some fouls or find people, which he was excellent at (finding people). I just thought we played at a far higher intensity level than our opponent during that stretch."
