GLEN BURNIE, MD.- Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) pitched six strong innings as the Maryland baseball team rolled past Howard, 18-0, Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. Stuart was dominant, allowing just one hit while striking out five, in his six innings of work.
The victory was the third in a row for the Terps and the team's first shutout since May 5, 2000, when Maryland blanked NC State, 3-0.
The Maryland offense got on the board in the first inning with the help of two Howard errors. After Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) reached on a fielding error by third baseman Alan Harrison and Steve Oursler singled, John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) reached on a two-base error by Howard rightfielder David Durrand, scoring both Patenaude and Oursler. Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) drove in McCurdy for the Terrapins' third run of the inning after McCurdy advanced to third on a balk by Howard starter Erik Causey.
The Terps kept the pressure on with runs in every inning except the seventh. Maryland scored three in both the second and the third, one in the fourth, seven in the fifth and one in the sixth to round out the scoring.
Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) paced the Terrapin attack by going 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Steve Oursler also drove in three runs on the day by going 1-for-4 at the plate. John McCurdy was also strong with the bat, knocking in two runs with his 2-for-3 performance, including two doubles and three runs scored. The Maryland native also stole two bases in the win.
Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) pounded out a career-high three hits on the day as he went 3-for-4 with three runs and a stolen base. Brian Patenaude also delivered three hits in five at-bats to go with two runs and two RBI.
Jared Stuart picked up the win for the Terps and is now 1-0 on the year. Stuart leads all Maryland starting pitchers with a sparkling 2.45 ERA after three starts. The New York native has allowed just 10 hits in 18.1 innings of work this season with 13 strikeouts.
Erik Causey (0-2) is tabbed with the loss for Howard. Causey pitched 4.0 innings, giving up 15 runs on 12 hits, with 11 of the runs earned. Causey walked three and struck out one.
The Terps improve to 4-4 on the year while Howard falls to 1-9. Maryland is back in action Tuesday, March 6, when Georgetown visits Shipley Field in the 2001 home opener for the Terps. Play is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
