ATLANTA, Ga.-Jason Basil and Jason Perry hit back-to-back homeruns in a nine-run second inning as the No.3 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 15-1, Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets went quietly in the first inning, but exploded for nine runs in the second. Five hits including back-to-back homeruns along with two hit batters and a walk all led to the nine-run outburst. The Terrapins and starting pitcher Eric D'Alessandro (Middletown, N.J.) looked to be out of the inning, but Tech scored all nine runs with two outs to take control of the contest.
In the fourth, the Yellow Jackets scored two runs off the bat of Basil. The senior right fielder delivered a double to center, scoring Victor Menocal and Bryan Prince, to make the score 11-0. Basil finished the day going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI.
Georgia Tech crossed home plate with three more runs in the seventh with a three-run homer off the bat of Menocal. The junior infielder went 3-for-5 with five runs driven in on the night.
The Terrapins got on the scoreboard with one run in the eighth. Shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) drove in right fielder Edwin Thompson (Jay, Maine) with a sacrifice fly, to make the score 14-1.
With the victory, Georgia Tech improves to 18-6 overall and 2-2 in the ACC while the Terrapins fall to 5-13 and 0-4 in the conference. All four losses in the conference for Maryland have been to teams ranked in the Top 15 by Baseball America.
Both schools will continue their three-game series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
