
Virginia Too Much For Baseball Team, 15-7

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Virginia RF Chris Sweet went 5-for-6 with five RBIs as the Cavaliers topped Maryland, 15-7, Saturday afternoon in Charlottesville.
The Terrapins got off to a good start with two runs on four hits in the first inning. Junior DH Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) extended his hitting to seven games with a two-run single to give Maryland a 2-0 advantage.
In the home half of the first, Virginia got one run back to make the score 2-1. Catcher Mark Rueffert lined a RBI single to right-center to put the Cavaliers on the board.
In the Maryland third, a two-out error by Virginia second baseman Shawn McCleary opened the door for the Terrapins to add to their lead. After McDonald reached on an error and SS Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) singled, junior CF Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) lined a RBI single to score McDonald and give the Terps' a 3-1 lead.
The Cavaliers rallied with four runs in the fourth to take their first lead of the afternoon, 5-3. Five hits in the inning including two-RBI doubles by DH Dan Street and CF Doug Vroman highlighted the Virginia third.
Two Virginia errors and a wild pitch in the fourth helped Maryland tie the game at five. Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.) led off the frame with a single and later scored on a wild pitch from Virginia hurler Brandon Creswell to pull the Terps to within one. John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) added a sacrifice fly to tie the contest at five.
The seesaw affair continued in the home half of the fourth as Street delivered his second extra-base hit off the game with a RBI triple to right-center to give Virginia the lead once again at 6-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, Virginia scored one run to make the score 7-5. Jon Benick slammed a double off the top of the left field fence to drive in SS Hunter Wyant for the Cavs' seventh run.
The Terps tied the game with two runs in the seventh. Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) came through with a clutch two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-6 Virginia. Pinch hitter Eric D'Alessandro (Middletown, N.J.) then reached base when McCleary recorded his second error of the game, which brought home Swope to tie the game at 7-7.
Virginia answered right back with six runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. David Stone laced a RBI single to center to put the Cavaliers back on top, 8-7. After an intentional walk to McCleary, Wyant collected his second hit of the game with a RBI single to center to make it 9-7 Virginia. After another intentional walk, Street (3-for-4, 4 RBIs) hit a bloop single to center to score two to push the lead to 11-7. The final blow of the frame was a two-RBI double by Sweet to increase the Virginia lead to 13-7.
UVa scored another two runs in the eighth to close the scoring at 15-7.
