Kansas State Outlasts Baseball Team, 11-8

MANHATTAN, Kan.- Senior LF Brian Patenaude (Marietta, Ga.) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in as the Maryland baseball team lost to Kansas State, 11-8, Monday night in Manhattan.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first. Second baseman Josh Cavender delivered the first run of the game with a single to right to score SS Omar Castillo. Cavender stole second later in the inning and then scored on a two-out RBI single from LF Kasey Weishaar.
The Terrapins got right back into the game in the third when junior DH Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) drove in Patenaude and senior RF Steve Oursler (Clinton, Md.) to tie the score at two.
Maryland scored three more runs in the fourth to take its first lead of the night, 5-2. Kansas State starter Jared Brite pitched his way into a jam by loading the bases with two walks and a hit batter to set the table for senior 1B Chuck Easter (Baltimore, Md.). Easter made him pay with a bases clearing double to give the Terps a 5-2 advantage.
Kansas State added six unearned runs in the fourth to regain the lead, 8-5. Two Maryland errors in the inning led to the six-run explosion that came with two outs. A throwing error by freshman 2B Jeremy Suarez (Lakewood, N.J.) opened the door for the Wildcats' big inning.
The fourth inning was costly for Maryland as starter Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) was hit with a line drive on his pitching hand and he was forced to leave the game. Lyons tossed 3.2 innings and yielded just two earned runs on five hits while fanning four.
Junior RHP Ken Beck (Laurel, Md.) came in for Lyons in the inning and surrendered three unearned runs. The big blow came when Kansas State DH Pat Maloney hit a three-run double to give the Wildcats an 8-5 advantage.
The Terrapins got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning to close the Kansas State lead to 8-7. After freshman C Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) walked to leadoff the inning, senior SS Sean Lomas (Brewster, N.Y.) doubled, to put runners on second and third with nobody out. A sacrifice fly from Suarez scored the first run in the inning to make the score 8-6. Later in the inning, Patenaude smacked his third hit of the game with a RBI single to score Lomas and bring the Terrapins to within one at 8-7.
The 'Cats scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to increase their lead to 10-7 after six innings of play.
Patenaude smacked his second double of the night and his fourth hit in four at-bats to score the Terps' eighth run of the night in the seventh. With Jeremy Suarez on first after reaching base on an error, Patenaude knocked in his second RBI with his double to left center to close the Wildcat lead to 10-8.
K-State added insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to close out the scoring at 11-8.
The loss drops Maryland to 10-20 on the year while Kansas State improves to 13-20. The two teams will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 11 a.m. The game was originally set for 1 p.m.
