Washington, D.C. - The Children's Charities Foundation (CCF), BB&T DC Metro President Robert Pincus and NCAA coaches Gary Williams and Karl Hobbs today announced the distribution of more than $3.3 million to over 100 charities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. CCF raises its funds through the BB&T Classic, an annual two-day college basketball event featuring host schools, George Washington University and University of Maryland, and the BasketBall, a pre-event black tie gala. Last year's event and Gala raised over $635,000.
"The basketball event lasts just a weekend but the goodwill the Children's Charities Foundation generates lasts the entire year," said CCF Chairman Peter Teeley.
In 1994, inspired by Teeley, a group of Washington-area business and professional leaders recognized the acute need to raise funds for at-risk children in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The Children's Charities Foundation was formed to maintain and support public and private programs and services for children in need.
Organizations that have benefited from CCF efforts this past year include Adoptions Together, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the National Capital Area, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and of Montgomery County, Capital Children's Museum, The Child and Family Network Centers (formerly the Alexandria Community Network Preschool), Childhelp USA, Children's National Medical Center, DC Children's Advocacy Center, I Have A Dream Foundation, Joy of Sports Foundation, Life Pieces to Masterpieces, Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs, St. Ann's Infant and Maternity Home and Young DC.
"For many groups, the money from CCF is critical to continuing their work," said Pincus. "We appreciate the fact that Maryland and GW give up two home games to participate in the BB&T Classic so that these organizations can benefit."
The Seventh Annual BB&T Classic will feature George Washington University and the University of Maryland, welcoming Princeton University and the University of Connecticut to MCI Center on Sunday, Dec. 2 and Monday, Dec. 3. In first round matchups, Maryland will meet Princeton, with Hobbs guiding the Colonials against his former team, Connecticut. Ticket applications are available by calling 202-628-3200 ext. 6984.
