DV: What a great story! Gary Williams and his staff have done a great job working with Lonny Baxter on the inside. Once Baxter developed consistency, he became unbelievably tough on the interior. Baxter is very difficult to handle, giving Maryland a presence in the lane once he catches the rock in deep. He knows how to utilize his body to seal off defenders.
It is not yet September, but college basketball analyst Dick Vitale is rolling into full swing, naming his preseason All-Americans, with Terrapins Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon filling spots on the first two teams.
Each team included exactly one player at each position, with Dixon named the shooting guard on Dickie V's second team. Vitale had this to say about Maryland's All-America senior guard:
Dixon can do it all. He's a defensive dynamo who can challenge the opponent's top gun. Dixon makes things happen, he can score quickly with his shooting range and ability in transition.
Earlier this month, Vitale already unveiled his preseason Top 25, with Maryland ranked No. 2 behind defending ACC and NCAA champion Duke. Here is a look at what Vitale had to say about the Terrapins:
2. Maryland -- The Terps return a solid nucleus, with a super inside-outside duo of Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon. Baxter is one of the most powerful inside players around, while Dixon is deadly on the perimeter. Steve Blake is an outstanding ball-handler. Gary Williams will get more from Tahj Holden and Chris Wilcox. It should be a special season in the final year of Cole Field House.
