Maryland vs. Norfolk State: Postgame Quotes

Jan. 3, 2002

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
On Maryland's balanced scoring and solid play all around:
"When we are like that, we're tough to beat. Chris [Wilcox] snuck in with nine [points], and we almost had six guys in double-figures, so that is good to see. We cut turnovers down to 11, and we had 15 blocks."

On the play of Ryan Randle:
"It was great to see poise when he went in. It didn't look like he felt any extra pressure because our four inside guys weren't there tonight -- we only had three. I was really pleased with how he played."

On the play of Andre Collins:
"It was probably the greatest chance he had to play, and he certainly took advantage of it tonight. He is gradually doing that in practice, where he is tough to cover. He is learning how to make up for his size... We want our bench to get better."

On Lonny Baxter's injury, suffered Tuesday:
"I think Lonny will be healthy in a couple days. He came down on somebody's foot. It's almost like an ankle injury, when we have a guy that rolls over on the outside and it's like a strain. I wouldn't want to play without Lonny, but it's good to see Ryan Randle do what he did tonight, and Tahj Holden and Chris Wilcox were very mature players."

Norfolk State Head Coach Wil Jones
Opening statement:
"I think [Maryland is] better than they were last year. They execute well. When you play a team like Maryland at the speed with which they play, I try to convince my kids, 'You've got to make shots.' Maryland can simulate the speed of this kind of Division I game in practice, but we can't."

On Norfolk State's chances against the Terps:
"I thought we had opportunities -- we had good tips, we had good open looks. What starts to happen is your kids start holding up and trying to get closer to the basket and not take the [open] shot."

On coming back to Maryland and Cole Field House after being an assistant coach with the Terps:
"Maryland is the place I started my coaching career, and I thoroughly enjoy it. Gary does a real good job coaching and my kids can see that, they see the things that can happen, and hopefully it will help us. I'd rather come here and play and have a chance... When my team is juniors and seniors maybe I'll have another opportunity to come back here. Tonight we made history this way but I was hoping for an upset!"
