Maryland vs. North Carolina: Postgame Notes

Jan. 9, 2002

Recap| Box Score| Quotes

  • With tonight's win, the Terrapins (No. 4 AP, No. 4 USA Today/ESPN) improve their season-opening home record to 8-0. It matches the most consecutive home wins for a Maryland team since the Terps went undefeated (16-0) at Cole Field House during the 1994-95 season.

  • 112 points scored by the Terps is the most a Tar Heel team has ever given up in a basketball game.

  • Maryland's all-time largest ACC win was a 99-59, 40-point victory over South Carolina at Cole Field House on March 1, 1958, and an 81-41 win at Clemson on Dec. 4, 1953. Tonight's 33-point win was only seven points shy of Maryland's biggest ACC win, and was only two points off North Carolina's worst ACC loss (35 points vs. Duke, Feb. 29 1964, 104-69). It was also Maryland's largest margin of victory against the Heels. The previous margin was 25 points from Feb. 3, 1939.

  • The Terrapins snap a two-game losing streak at the hands of the Tar Heels with the win and close the series record to 49-107.

  • Maryland's field goal percentage of .579 (44-of-76) was the highest since the Terps shot .591 on Nov. 9, 2001 against Temple. Maryland is a .459 shooting team for the season and is 11-0 when shooting .400 or better.

  • The Terrapins were 13-of-23 (.565) from beyond the 3-point arc against UNC. Thirteen long-range bombs ties the Maryland record for 3-pointers made in a single-game from earlier this season, when the Terps cashed in on 13 threes va. William & Mary (Dec. 27).

  • Maryland has posted back-to-back home ACC wins of 30 points or more when tonight's performance is coupled with last season's 102-67 win over No. 7 Virginia on Mar. 3.

  • Maryland's 57 points in the first half marked the largest Terrapin point total in over a year. The Terps scored 59 points in the first half at Clemson on Jan. 2 of last season.

  • The Terrapin halftime lead was 20 (57-37), marking the largest advantage at the half since a 25-point lead over American on Nov. 17 of this season. The Terps forced 14 North Carolina first half turnovers and led by as many as 25 (at 8:38 in the first half), but the Tar Heels shot 16-of-30 (.533) from the field to keep the lead from getting any higher.

  • Four Terrapins scored in double-figures: Juan Dixon (game-high 29 points), Byron Mouton (17), Chris Wilcox (16), Steve Blake (12).

  • Dixon's 29 points were a new season-high for the senior Wooden Award Candidate. He had scored 25 points against both Temple (Nov. 9) and then-No. 2 Illinois (Nov. 27) earlier this season, and has scored 20 or more 32 times.

  • Dixon added eight steals against the Tar Heels (including six in the first half) to fall one short of the Terp record for steals in a game. The record stands at nine, set twice by Johnny Rhodes (at North Carolina, Feb. 7, 1996, vs. American, Dec. 23, 1995).

  • Blake handed out a career-high 14 assists (nine in the first half) against UNC. Blake's total was one short of Terrell Stokes' school-record 15 helpers vs. Western Carolina on Nov. 14, 1998.

  • Blake registered his third career double-double with the 14 assists and 12 points. He was one rebound shy of Maryland's second triple-double in school history, set by Cedric Lewis (32 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks) vs. UMBC on Feb. 17, 1987.

  • Senior big man Lonny Baxter checked back into the starting line-up after sitting out the Norfolk State game (Jan. 3) with an ankle injury. He scored nine points to move above the 1,500-point milestone, and now totals 1,505 for his career. Baxter needs 174 rebounds to become Maryland's first 1,500 point/1,000 rebound man.

  • Mouton netted 17 points to match his second-highest total of the season. He has scored 90 points (12.9 ppg) in the last seven games.
