COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
For the first time in Maryland history, every Terrapin men's basketball game will be televised live to a regional or national audience. It was announced this week that the Terps' home game on Dec. 23 vs. UMBC (8:00 p.m.) will be carried regionally on Comcast SportsNet. Previously, it was the only game out of 29 preseason and regular season contests that was not scheduled for television.
Last season, neither exhibition contest was televised, nor was the 2001-02 home opening game against American. Overall, the Terrapins played 35 out of 38 games that were on TV, including all games of the ACC and NCAA Tournament.
Maryland opens its 2002 exhibition schedule on Nov. 12 against the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters in what will be the first game ever to be televised from Comcast Center (7:00 p.m., ESPN2). After a second exhibition game, scheduled for Comcast SportsNet on Nov. 19, the Terrapins will open the first week of the regular season with three straight home games. The first official game at Comcast Center will take place against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Nov. 24, and will be televised on ESPN2 (5:00 p.m.). The homestand continues against The Citadel on Nov. 27 (8:00 p.m., Comcast) and Duquesne on Nov. 30 (8:00 p.m., Raycom-Jefferson Pilot).
The defending champion Terrapins will play a 27-game regular season schedule in which all games - plus both exhibition contests - will be televised on regional or national television. Twelve games plus the exhibition opener against the Globetrotters will be televised nationally on ESPN (3), ESPN2 (3), FOX Sports Net (4), CBS (2) and ABC (1).
