CARY, N.C. - Maryland placed four Terps on the 2002 all-ACC men's soccer team as announced tonight in Cary, N.C., in conjunction with the ACC Tournament, which begins tomorrow. Sumed Ibrahim (Tamale, Ghana) received first-team honors as chosen by the ACC head coaches, while Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.), Seth Stammler (Gahanna, Ohio), and Abe Thompson (Fairfax Stations, Va.) were all selected to the second team.
Sumed is one of 15 finalists for the 2002 MAC Hermann Trophy, which is given annually to the top men's and women's collegiate soccer player in the nation. The Terps' second-leading scorer this year with seven goals and five assists, the redshirt-junior leads Maryland with six game-winning goals this season. He has earned various Player of the Week nods from not only the ACC, but also Soccer America and College Soccer News.
Buete, one of the Terps' tri-captains, has scored two goals and six assists for 10 points this season. A redshirt-junior midfielder for Maryland, he scored the gamewinner against Clemson and is currently tied for sixth on Maryland's all-time assists list with 19. He was named ACC Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 29.
Stammler, who anchors Maryland's central defense and is also a tri-captain, has helped the Terps' maintain one of the stingiest defenses in the ACC this year. Along the way, this converted forward has added four assists in 2002 and was recently named to the Verizon academic all-district squad for his outstanding performance in the classroom and on the field.
Thompson, the Terps' third captain this season, leads Maryland in scoring with nine goals and six assists. Thompson also led the Terps in scoring his freshman year with 31 points. He was named a member of the Maryland/FILA Classic all-tournament team and his four game-winning goals are second on the team.
The No. 2 seed in the tournament, Maryland begins tournament action Thursday, Nov. 14, at 5:30 p.m. against No. 7 seed NC State. That game will be available on WMUC 88.1 FM in College Park, Md., as well as on the station's Internet entities, www.wmucradio.com and www.wmucsports.com.
