* Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski became just the third woman and the youngest person ever to be inducted in the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Oct. 14. Higgins-Cirovski continued to earn the accolades as she was named ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in four seasons.
* The Terps were honored with five individual player honors at the ACC Awards Banquet held last week as Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N.J.) was named to the All-ACC first team. Redshirt freshman Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) and freshman Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) were both named to the All-ACC second team. Mahar and leading scorer Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) were named to the ACC All-Freshman team, also.
* On the field, the Terps had their first-ever positive result against the storied North Carolina women's soccer program, as they tied them 1-1 on Nov. 1. The highest ranked team Maryland has ever beaten was No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000.
* Maryland won at Clemson for the first-time in school history after five previous losses at Riggs Field dating to 1994. The Oct. 20 win by the score of 3-2, was a dramatic one as junior captain Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) scored with 6:33 left in regulation as her diving header off a rebound from a Katie Ludwig shot beat the Tiger keeper for the major victory.

* American has only faced one team in the field of 64, Richmond, which it lost to in its season-opener, 2-1 on Aug. 30.
* Penn State is 7-2 in games against the field winning five games against Big Ten squads. The two losses came to USC (1-0) and Michigan (4-0).
* Princeton has played three teams in the NCAA Tournament going 2-1 against them. They defeated fellow Ivy League squads Yale (2-0) and Dartmouth (4-1). They lost to William & Mary, 1-0 in overtime as coach Julie Shackford returned to play her alma mater on Oct. 30.

* Maryland and Princeton have both faced George Mason and William & Mary. Maryland won both games against the Patriots (3-0) and Tribe (1-0), while the Tigers beat George Mason (3-1) and lost to William & Mary (1-0) in overtime.
Higgins-Cirovski In NCAA's
* Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski is in her fourth NCAA Tournament as a coach and third with Maryland. She led George Washington to its first-ever NCAA bid in 1996 where the Colonials, ironically, lost to Maryland 2-0.
* She is 1-3 in NCAA matches with the win in a 1999 first round win over Long Island in her initial playoff game as the Terps' coach. * Princeton has one Maryland native in Theresa Sherry, who played at the Bryn Mawr School.
Current Terps In The NCAA Tournament
* Twelve current Terps on the roster have played in the NCAA Tournament but four of those players will not play due to injury in this year's tournament: Melissa Anderson (concussion), Sally Harrison, (kneecap), Valerie Lawrence (knee), and Carly Viher (knee).
* Senior Dana Jarzyniecki and junior Lindsay Givens lead the way with three games played in the 1999 and 2001 events.
* No active member of the Terps has scored in the NCAA Tournament
* Injured Valerie Lawrence is tied for the school record for assists in a tournament game with two vs. LIU in 1999. Sally Harrison also has an assist.
The Maryland-American Series
* The Terps and Eagles have played four times with Maryland holding a 3-0-1 advantage in the series, but the teams have not played since 1993. Three of the four gams have gone to overtime.
* The Terps have outscored the Eagles, 8-1 in the four games with AU's lone goal coming in the first meeting a 1-1 tie on Oct. 19, 1990. No. 14 Maryland won the last meeting 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 22, 1993.
* The teams have scrimmaged each other in fall preseason in recent years with the Terps beating American, 7-0, in a preseason match in 2001.
The Maryland-Penn State Series
* The Terps and Nittany Lions have split six previous meetings, 3-3 after Maryland fell to No. 13 Penn State 1-0 in this season's regular-season match on Oct. 8 as Joanna Lohman scored in the 67th minute.
* In the last game at Ludwig Field between the teams, Maryland beat Penn State for its only program win over a top-five ranked team. In the last meeting between the clubs in College Park, No. 23 Maryland upset No. 4 Penn State, 3-1 on Aug. 29, 2000 in College Park. In that dramatic win Sara Gustafson netted a hat trick for all three goals.
* In the team's only previous NCAA Tournament match, Penn State won the meeting in State College, in the second round, with a 3-2 win on Nov. 14, 1999. Lindsay Basalyga scored both goals in that tough defeat.
The Maryland-Princeton Series
* Maryland and Princeton played four times with the Terps holding a 2-1-1 lead in the series that has been dormant since 1995. The Terps won the last two games, 4-1 in 1995 and 6-0 in 1994 before the series stopped. The match on Sept. 15, 1995 was just the third women's match ever at Ludwig Field.
* Princeton won the first match, 5-0 against a fledging Maryland program in its third year in 1989 and the teams tied in 1993, 2-2 in College Park.
Maryland Kicks Offense into High Gear
* Maryland's offense has continued its high-scoring pace this season with 45 goals in 20 matches for a 2.21 goals per game average. That total is nearly double the entire season total for all of 2001, when the Terps tallied 24 goals in 19 games (1.26 per game). Maryland surpassed that 24-goal mark in the ninth game of this season in the 3-2 win over Duke on Sept. 27.
* The Terps' 45 goals this season are the most since Shannon Higgins-Cirovski took over as coach and the most since 1998 when they scored 55.
* Of the 45 goals this season, 22 - nearly half - have come from freshmen as ACC All-Freshman team honoree Ali Andrzejewski leads the Terps with nine goals after scoring vs. Florida State in the ACC Quarterfinals. Fellow ACC All-Freshman team member and All-ACC second team award winner Mallory Mahar has five goals this season - all on headers. Lightning-fast freshman Simone Dekker also has five goals. Second-team All-ACC honoree Kimmy Francis has three goals in her first college season as a redshirt-freshman after sitting out all of last season.
* The Terps are 11-1 overall this season when they score the first goal of the game after Mallory Mahar put the Terps up 1-0 in the ACC Quarterfinals against Florida State, scoring in the 27th minute. Maryland has won its last six games in which it has scored first. The only loss came to then-No. 15 Notre Dame on Sept. 15.
* Maryland is 6-0 in games which they lead at halftime as they did against FSU in the ACC Tournament, leading 2-1 after the first 45 minutes.
* Maryland has seven players with 10 or more points after having just two last season.
* The attack has been led by Ali Andrzejewski, Audra Poulin, and All-ACC first teammer Katie Ludwig.
* Poulin went on a torrid stretch in mid-October, scoring four goals in a three-game span. She is second on the team with a career-high eight goals and is also second in points with 19. She posted her first multi-goal game against George Mason on Oct. 16, with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Poulin came into the season with just three goals in her first two seasons.
* Poulin was named to the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz Teams of the Week for her performances last week.
* The freshman sensation, Andrzejewski leads the club with 20 points after scoring her team-high ninth goal against Florida State in the ACC Quarterfinal.
* Ludwig was the difference in the Terps' win at Clemson on Oct. 20, as she assisted the game-winning goal and scored the game-tying goal, both on great individual efforts. She now has 16 points to stand third on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists, all of which are career highs.
* For Poulin and Ludwig, the goal totals are more than each player had scored in all of last season. Ludwig had two goals in 2001, although she did play most of the year on defense and Poulin had three goals last season -- the first three of her career.
* The assists have also been coming at a fast rate with all of the goals. Redshirt Freshman Kimmy Francis had a career-high four points as she added to her team-high assist total of eight with a pair against James Madison on Oct. 28. Francis notched her second goal of the season on a free kick and is fourth on the team in scoring with 14 points. She scored her third goal against Florida State in the ACC Tournament. She also scored her first collegiate goal vs. George Washington. Francis' eight assists are one short of tying the school record for for helpers by a freshman when Emmy Harbo had nine assists in 1995.
* Junior Jenny Biscoe has 12 points after scoring her second goal of the year at James Madison and a pair of assists against Florida State in the ACC Tournament. She has eight assists to tie for the team lead with Francis. Earlier this season, she tied a school-record with a three-assist performance at Rutgers on Sept. 6. Biscoe scored her first goal of the season notching the game-winner at Clemson (10/20).
* Defender/midfielder Mallory Mahar has been a force on the offensive end all season with her headers in the box. All five of her goals including the first in the game at James Madison have come on headers off set pieces. She converted a corner kick from Francis for the first goal vs. the Dukes. Overall, she has 12 points on the five goals and two assists.
* Senior Kim King has been an important cog off the bench as she has three goals and two assists for eight points this season. She notched the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the win over Duke, scoring in the 66th minute and the game-winner in the 43rd minute against Virginia on Oct. 11.
* Freshman Simone Dekker has been a great addition, as the speedy forward has played in all 20 games and posted five goals and three assists for 13 points to rank fifth on the team. She has scored three of her five goals against ACC teams and eight of her 13 points have come against conference foes after scoring against Florida State in the ACCs.
* Senior Dana Jarzyniecki continues to provide stability in the midfield in her fourth year. She has played in all 80 games since she came in College Park in 1999 and ranks tied for 12th in career assists with 11.
On the Defensive Side
* Junior goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill has been strong in the net since she has been given the starting role for the last eight games (she did come off the bench after seven minutes against Florida State to allow for senior Lynn Scharf to start). She has a 1.30 goals against average, playing in 12 matches overall in 2002, stopping 78.0 percent of the shots she has faced.
* She posted a pair of shutouts over Virginia and George Mason in her first two collegiate starts. Those shutouts marked the first time in eight years that a Maryland keeper had shutouts in her first two starts. In September of 1995, freshman Kassie Knecht shut out William & Mary and Old Dominion in back-to -back games making three saves in each of her first two college starts. Barnhill posted a career-high seven saves in the big ACC win at Clemson on Oct. 20. She came up big in her first two major playing opportunities this season. First, she showed her worth when she came on in the 33rd minute against Duke, when Wilner was injured, and made five saves in preserving the Terps' critical ACC win for her first collegiate victory. On Oct. 11, Barnhill drew her first start after Wilner was issued a red card at Penn State and was forced to sit out the Virginia, and Barnhill made three saves in posting her first solo shutout. She followed that up with two saves vs. the Patriots.
* The Terps' defense was strong as well with freshman goalkeeper Mariel Wilner in the net for the first 12 starts of the season. Wilner has a 1.65 goals against average and a .638 save percentage in her first collegiate season. Wilner picked up her first collegiate solo shutout with five saves against William & Mary.
* Aiding the keepers on the backline is junior 2001 All-ACC selection Lindsay Givens along with senior Katie Kruse, sophomore Lindsay Niehaus and freshmen Mallory Mahar and Kristin McHugh. Mahar, who has also moved up to midfield in the last few games, has been a force on set pieces recording five goals all on headers off corner kicks this season including the game-winner vs. William & Mary. Sophomore Amy Johnson has seen additional playing time due to the season-ending knee injury to Jennifer Lovecchio and nagging injuries to McHugh.
Terps Moving Up Assist Chart
* Three Terps are moving up the Maryland career assist chart. Lindsay Givens is tied with Kelly Amonte for sixth all-time with 14 assists after picking up her third of the 2002 season on a throw-in that led to Mallory Mahar's goal vs. Florida State in the ACC Tourney.
* With her pair of assists at Florida State in the ACC Tournament, Jenny Biscoe now has 13 career assists -- eight this season -- to rank tied for eighth all-time at Maryland with Michelle Deville. Biscoe tied the school record for assists in a game with three at Rutgers. Dana Jarzyniecki set the record originally vs. Howard on Oct. 11, 2000.
* Dana Jarzyniecki has 11 in her career to stand tied for 12th all-time at Maryland. She added her 11th assist against George Washington on Sept. 22.
The Injury Report
* Three Terp defenders will be out for nearly the entire 2002 season with major injuries. Senior Valerie Lawrence is redshirting the 2002 season as she continues to recover from a torn ACL in her left knee. Junior captain Carly Viher is also out for the season after tearing the ACL in her left knee for the second time in just over a year on Sept. 17 in practice. She underwent surgery on Friday, Sept. 27. She is expected to return next season.
* Junior Sally Harrison, who was granted a redshirt year in 2001 after playing just four games, will finish her college career this season after suffering a dislocated knee cap suffered in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 16, 2001. She did play the first seven minutes against Florida State on Senior Night, but is not expected to play again this season.
* Sophomore Melissa Anderson will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a concussion at Clemson. She is undergoing further oberservation and will not suit up again this season.
* Sophomore Jennifer Lovecchio will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a sprained MCL in practice on Nov. 4 and is in a brace. She had limited in early action this season because of a concussion suffered in the Penn State game.
