Dear University of Maryland Basketball Season Ticket Holders,
We are sorry that some of you encountered unacceptable traffic and parking delays while trying to make your way to the Comcast Center for last Tuesday night's game. Please be assured we are aware of these issues and that we are working closely with the campus departments of parking, transportation and police to insure that traffic flow and parking patterns are as efficient as possible.
Unfortunately, there were a number of factors contributing to Tuesday's traffic issues which included:
1. ESPN's decision to change the game time from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. directly conflicts with the start time of many evening classes, the departure of many commuter day students AND normal evening rush hour in the College Park area. In addition, Tuesday night's regular rush hour was hampered by the heavy rain. Although we can do nothing about the weather, we can assure you that future weeknight game times will be 8:00 p.m. or later, except for one televised game on Tuesday, February 25th which starts at 7 p.m.
2. As this was the first game in the new Comcast Center, many fans were visiting Comcast for the first time and unsure where Comcast Center parking was located. Unfortunately, this led many fans to stop and ask directions from police officers directing traffic and/or parking attendants. As fans familiarize themselves with the Comcast parking situation, we anticipate the need to ask for directions will decrease and that fans will find the quickest way on and off campus. In addition, we will work with the campus departments of parking, transportation and police to insure that all fans, when asking directions, are given accurate information.
We will also use our website www.umterps.com to directly link fans with the University's on-line parking and traffic information website. This will allow fans to arrive on campus knowing the most direct routes.
3. The Department of Campus parking had instituted a new parking pass system for this basketball season which utilizes a tear-off stub on each parking pass. The tearing off of parking passes has been suspended for the remainder of the season. It is important to note that permit pass backs to individuals that have not purchased parking privileges is not permitted. Permit pass backs create over crowding in parking areas. Abuses of such privileges may result in permit revocation.
In order to facilitate traffic flow and ease entry into permitted parking areas for Men's Basketball games please follow the suggested directions to your parking assignment area. We feel that these directions will improve traffic flow and decrease arrival times to the University. If you are not attending the game and give your tickets and parking pass to another person we suggest that you forward them these directions.
