No. 16 Terps Battle No. 19 Seminoles In First Round
The No. 16 Maryland Terrapins women's soccer team heads to the ACC Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 seed and host No. 19 Florida State in the final of four first- round games at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Sunshine Network and available on DirecTV (Channel 632) and Dish Network (Channel 422) across the nation including the Baltimore/ Washington D. C., region.
* The winner of Thursday's match will advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals and face the winner No. 1 seeded North Carolina/ No. 8 seeded Wake Forest match which will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The title match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1:30 p.m., and will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and Sunshine Network.
* The Terps are hot heading into the 2002 Tournament, having posting a 4- 1- 1 in their last six games including their first- ever positive result against 17- time national champion North Carolina, with a 1- 1 tie in the regular- season finale. Maryland stands at 11- 6- 1 overall and posted a 3- 3- 1 mark in the ACC. The Terps are ranked in the top 20 in all four polls this week, coming in at No. 16 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll, No. 17 in the Soccer Times poll, No. 18 in the Soccer Buzz poll and No. 19 in the Soccer America rankings.
* The Seminoles are 11- 5- 3 also went 3- 3- 1 in the league. They finished fourth -- winning the tie- breaker with Maryland by virtue of their 1- 0 win in College Park on Oct. 25. The Noles lost their regular- season finale to Virginia last Saturday, 2- 1, ending a four-game winning streak. Florida State is also ranked in all four polls, coming in at No. 19 in the NSCAA Coaches' Poll, No. 20 in the Soccer Buzz poll, No. 22 by Soccer America and No. 23 by Soccer Buzz.
Givens Named To Soccer America Team Of The Week
Maryland junior defender Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week after she scored the Terps' lone goal in the 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina. It's Givens' first Soccer America honor this season.
Earlier this season, Audra Poulin (Silver Spring, Md.) was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for the Terps' only other honor from the magazine this season.
A Look At The Terps' Breakthrough Season
* This season has been one of major improvements and achievements for the Maryland women's soccer team this season. Here are a few of the notable events and moments.
* Maryland head coach Shannon Higgins- Cirovski became just the third woman and the youngest person ever to be inducted in the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Oct. 14.
* The Terps had their first ever positive result against the storied North Carolina women's soccer program, as they tied them 1- 1 on Nov. 1. In tying the No. 2 Heels, the Terps also picked up their best ever result against a team ranked in the top two in the nation. The highest ranked team Maryland has ever beaten was No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000.
* Maryland won at Clemson for the first- time in school history after five previous losses at Riggs Field dating to 1994. The Oct. 20 win by the score of 3- 2, was a dramatic one as junior captain Jen Biscoe (Baltimore, Md.) scored with 6:33 left in regulation as her diving header off a rebound from a Katie Ludwig (Mount Laurel, N. J.) shot beat the Tiger keeper for the major victory.
* Maryland posted 11 regular- season victories, the most it has garnered since it went 11- 7- 1 in 1997 and finished 12-9-3 that season.
* The 11 wins equals the best win total for Shannon Higgins- Cirovski in her four years at Maryland, as she went 11- 10- 1 in her first year of 1999.
* The Terps have scored 41 goals this season after netting just 24 last season. The total is the most since they scored 55 in 1998 and the most under Higgins- Cirovski.
* With a 3- 3- 1 conference record, Maryland posted a .500 or better record for just the fourth time in school history, with two of them coming under Higgins- Cirovski in the last four years. In 1999 Maryland went an all- time best 4- 2- 1 to finish second in the ACC for its highest finish ever.
The Maryland-Florida State Series
* The Terps and Seminoles have met nine previous times, once each season dating back to 1995, until last season when they met twice. They meet for the second time this season, the second year in a row they have played twice. Maryland leads the overall series, 5- 4, outscoring FSU 18- 14. * Florida State won this season's regular- season match on Oct. 25 to dampen Maryland's Senior Night, 1- 0. FSU's Cindy Schofield scored on a penalty kick in the second minute for the game's only goal.
* The Seminoles won both games last season, winning the 2001 regular-season finale in Tallahassee, 2- 0 on Nov. 2 and beating the Terps, 7- 2 in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Nov. 8. The Terps' goals in that game came from Valerie Lawrence and Kim King, who scored off assists from Jen Biscoe and Lindsay Givens.
The Terps' ACC Tournament History
* Maryland has an all- time record of 6- 14- 2 (Maryland won both ties on penalty kicks) in ACC Tournament games dating back to the first year of the event in 1988.
* Last season, Maryland fell to No. 3 seed Florida State, 7- 2 in the first round on Nov. 8, 2001 in Winston- Salem, N. C.
* In 1999, as its highest seed ever, No. 2 seed Maryland advanced to the semifinals with a 2- 1 quarterfinal win over No. 7 seed Duke on Nov. 4, 1999 before falling to No. 3 seed Wake Forest, 1- 0, in the semis on Nov. 5.
* Maryland had its only runs to the ACC finals in 1995 and 1997, the only other time the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament was held at Wake Forest. In 1995, as the No. 3 seed, the Terps defeated Clemson 2- 0 in the first round and NC State 1- 0 in the second round before falling to eventual champion North Carolina 3- 0.
* In 1997, Maryland escaped NC State in the first round, 4- 3, in penalty kicks after tying 1- 1 in regulation. The Terps advanced to the finals with a 2- 1 win over Duke. In that win, Jackie Mynarski scored Maryland's first goal, while Keri Sarver added the winner. Ali Wolff (Richmond, Va.) made five saves for the win. The Terps dropped the final to North Carolina, 4- 0.
Maryland Vs. Florida State In The ACC Tournament
* This season marks Maryland's second- ever postseason meeting with Florida State and second year in a row they have played. The Seminoles were the only team the Terps had not played in the ACC Tournament prior to last season.
* Florida State won last season's game by the score of 7- 2 in Winston- Salem.
The ACC's At Tallahassee & In Florida
* This is the first time the ACC Tournament is being held at Florida State. It is the second time the event is in Florida.
* In 1998, Disney's Wide World of Sports hosted the event and No. 5 seeded Maryland fell in the first round by the score of 2- 1 to Wake Forest in Orlando.
The Terps As The No. 5 Seed
* This season marks the eighth time Maryland will be the No. 5 seed, the most of any position heading into the tournament. Maryland has a 2- 7 record as the No. 5 seed, having advanced to the semifinals in 1988 and 1991.
* In fact in their first six ACC Tournaments Maryland was the No. 5 seed as a fledging program from 1988- 1993.
* The last time the Terps were the No. 5 seed was in 1998, when they lost to Wake Forest in Orlando, Fla.
* In 1999, Maryland placed its highest in ACC regular- season history, earning its first- ever No. 2 seed.

Brief ACC Tournament History
*This season marks the 15th ACC women's soccer tournament. North Carolina has won the last 14 championships after dropping the inaugural title game to NC State, 2- 1 on penalty kicks in 1988.
* UNC coach Anson Dorrance has won 14 titles and former NC State coach Larry Gross won the 1988 title.
* North Carolina won last year's tournament with a 4- 0 victory in the final over Florida State, the Noles' first appearance in the final.
Higgins-Cirovski's ACC Tournament History
* This will be head coach Shannon Higgins- Cirovski's fourth ACC Tournament as a coach. In her first in 1999, Maryland beat Duke and lost to Wake Forest. Overall, she has a 1- 3 record at Maryland in the ACC's.
* As a player at North Carolina, Higgins- Cirovski played for the 1988 and 1989 North Carolina teams, which were ACC runners- up and champions, respectively.
* Higgins- Cirovski scored her only ACC Tournament goal against Maryland in the 1988 matchup that UNC won 3- 0. In the 1989 title game, she assisted on three goals including the game- winner scored by Mia Hamm.
Maryland Kicks Offense Into High Gear
* Maryland's offense has continued its high- scoring pace this season with 41 goals in 18 matches for a 2.28 goals per game average. That total is 17 more than the entire season total for all of 2001, when the Terps tallied 24 goals in 19 games (1.26 per game). Maryland surpassed that 24- goal mark in the ninth game of this season in the 3- 2 win over Duke on Sept. 27.
* The Terps' 41 goals this season are the most since Shannon Higgins- Cirovski took over as coach and the most since 1998 when they scored 55. * Maryland has seven players with 10 or more points after having just two last season.
* The attack has been led by Audra Poulin ( Silver Spring, Md.), Ali Andrzejewski ( Lutherville, Md.) and Katie Ludwig ( Mount Laurel, N. J.).
* Poulin had been on a torrid stretch in mid- October, scoring four goals in a three- game span. She leads the team with a career- high eight goals and tops the Terps in points with 19. She posted her first multi- goal game against George Mason on Oct. 16, with two goals in the first 16 minutes. Poulin came into the season with just three goals in her first two seasons.
* Poulin was named to the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz Teams of the Week for her performances last week.
* The freshman sensation, Andrzejewski is second on the club with 18 points after scoring her team- high tying eighth goal at James Madison last Monday night.
* Ludwig was the difference in the Terps' win at Clemson on Oct. 20, as she assisted the game- winning goal and scored the game- tying goal, both on great individual efforts. She now has 16 points to stand third on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists, all of which are career highs.
* For Poulin and Ludwig, the goal totals are more than each player had scored in all of last season. Ludwig had two goals in 2001, although she did play most of the year on defense and Poulin had three goals last season -- the first three of her career.
* The assists have also been coming at a fast rate with all of the goals. Redshirt Freshman Kimmy Francis ( Richboro, Pa.) had a career- high four points as she added to her team- high assist total of eight with a pair against James Madison on Oct. 28. Francis also notched her second goal of the season on a free kick and is fourth on the team in scoring with 12 points. She also scored her first collegiate goal vs. George Washington. Francis' eight assists are one short of tying the school record for helpers by a freshman when Emmy Harbo had nine assists in 1995.
* Junior Jenny Biscoe has 10 points after scoring her second goal of the year at James Madison. She has six assists to rank second on the team to Francis. Earlier this season, she tied a school- record with a three- assist performance at Rutgers on Sept. 6. Biscoe scored her first goal of the season notching the game- winner at Clemson (10/ 20).
* Defender/ midfielder Mallory Mahar ( Medina, Ohio) has been a force on the offensive end all season with her headers in the box. All four of her goals including the first in the game at James Madison have come on headers off set pieces. She converted a corner kick from Francis for the first goal vs. the Dukes. Overall, she has 10 points on the four goals and two assists.
* Senior Kim King ( Media, Pa.) has been an important cog off the bench as she has three goals and two assists for eight points this season. She notched the game- winning goal on a penalty kick in the win over Duke, scoring in the 66th minute and the game- winner in the 43rd minute against Virginia on Oct. 11.
* Freshman Simone Dekker ( Ringwood, N. J.) has been a great addition, as the speedy forward has played in all 18 games and posted four goals and three assists for 11 points.
* Senior Dana Jarzyniecki ( Rochester, N. Y.) continues to provide stability in the midfield in her fourth year. She has played in all 78 games since she came in College Park in 1999 and ranks tied for 11th in career assists with 11.
Terps' Defense Steps It Up
* Junior goalkeeper Kristen Barnhill ( Charlottesville, Va.) has been strong in the net since she has been given the starting role for the last six games ( she did come off the bench after seven minutes against Florida State to allow for senior Lynn Scharf to start). She has a 0.88 goals against average, playing in nine matches overall in 2002, stopping 83.7 percent of the shots she has faced.
* She posted a pair of shutouts over Virginia and George Mason in her first two collegiate starts. Those shutouts marked the first time in eight years that a Maryland keeper had shutouts in her first two starts. In September of 1995, freshman Kassie Knecht shut out William & Mary and Old Dominion in back- to - back games making three saves in each of her first two college starts. Barnhill posted a career- high seven saves in the big ACC win at Clemson on Oct. 20. She came up big in her first two major playing opportunities this season. First, she showed her worth when she came on in the 33rd minute against Duke, when Wilner was injured, and made five saves in preserving the Terps' critical ACC win for her first collegiate victory. On Oct. 11, Barnhill drew her first start after Wilner was issued a red card at Penn State and was forced to sit out the Virginia, and Barnhill made three saves in posting her first solo shutout. She followed that up with two saves vs. the Patriots.
* The Terps' defense was strong as well with freshman goalkeeper Mariel Wilner ( Owings Mills, Md.) in the net for the first 12 starts of the season. Wilner has a 1.65 goals against average and a .638 save percentage in her first collegiate season. Wilner picked up her first collegiate solo shutout with five saves against William & Mary.
* Aiding the keepers on the backline is junior All- ACC selection Lindsay Givens ( Downingtown, Pa.) along with junior Katie Kruse (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), sophomore Lindsay Niehaus ( Cincinnati, Ohio) and freshmen Mallory Mahar ( Medina, Ohio) and Kristin McHugh ( Gaithersburg, Md.). Mahar, who has also moved up to midfield in the last few games, has been a force on set pieces recording three goals all on headers off corner kicks this season including the game- winner vs. William & Mary. Jennifer Lovecchio (Vineland, N. J.) got back into action against Mason, playing 27 minutes after sitting out two games with a mild concussion.

Losses To Top Teams
* Each of the Terps defeats this season has come to a team that has been ranked in the NSCAA's Top 25 this season and five are ranked in this week's poll. Maryland, which is aiming to return to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in eight years faces one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. The Terps' six losses have come to this week's No. 9 Connecticut ( 3- 1 on Sept. 1), No. 11 Penn State ( 1- 0 on Oct. 8), No. 19 Florida State ( 1- 0 on Oct. 25), No. 21 Notre Dame ( 5- 2 on Sept. 15) and ( Receiving Votes) Wake Forest ( 3- 1 on Sept. 20). NC State, which handed the Terps, their other loss was No. 23 three weeks ago.
Moving Up The Assists Chart
* Three Terps are moving up the Maryland career assist chart. Lindsay Givens is tied for seventh all- time with 13 assists after picking up her second of the 2002 season on a corner kick that led to Ali Andrzejewski's goal vs. George Mason.
* Dana Jarzyniecki ( Rochester, N. Y.) has 11 in her career to stand tied for 11th all- time at Maryland. She added her 11th assist against George Washington on Sept. 22.
* With her fast start this season Jenny Biscoe now has 11 career assists and is closing in on the top 10. Biscoe tied the school record for assists in a game with three at Rutgers. Jarzyniecki set the record originally vs. Howard on Oct. 11, 2000. Biscoe picked up her sixth assist in the win over George Mason.
The Injury Report
* Three Terp defenders are still out with major injuries. Senior Valerie Lawrence is redshirting the 2002 season as she continues to recover from a torn ACL in her left knee. Junior captain Carly Viher is also out for the season after tearing the ACL in her left knee for the second time in just over a year on Sept. 17 in practice. She underwent surgery on Friday, Sept. 27. Junior Sally Harrison, who was granted a redshirt year in 2001 after playing just four games, will finish her college career this season after suffering a dislocated knee cap suffered in an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 16, 2001. She did play the first seven minutes against Florida State on Senior Night, but is not expected to play again this season.
* Sophomore Melissa Anderson ( Annapolis, Md.) will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a concussion at Clemson. She is undergoing further oberservation and will not suit up again this season.
* Sophomore Jennifer Lovecchio sat out the Penn State and Virginia games with a mild concussion. But played 27 minutes vs. George Mason and has played in three of the last four matches. Lovecchio suffered a knee injury earlier this week and is not expected to play in the ACC Tournament.
Five Terps To Be Honored By ACC
Five Maryland women's soccer players were named to the ACC's 50th Anniverary Women's Soccer Team and will be recognized this weekend at the ACC Tournament.
* Michelle Demko, Maryland (1993, 1995) - Plays for the Philadelphia Charge in the WUSA ... All- ACC first team selection in 1995 ... NSCAA All- Mid- Atlantic Region selection in 1995 ... ACC All- Tournament selection in 1995 ... Scored eight goals and seven assists for 23 points in 1993 and 1995.
* Emmy Harbo, Maryland (1995- 1998) - Second all- time leading scorer in Maryland history with 140 points ... Tallied 56 goals, second most ever and 28 assists from 1995- 98, also second- most for the Terps ... Led the team to four NCAA Tournament appearances from 1995- 1998 ... Named a third- team All- American by Soccer Buzz in 1996 ... Named a Soccer American Freshman All- American in 1995 ... Named to the NSCAA All- Region first team in 1995 and third team in 1998 ... Named to the Soccer Buzz All- Region team in 1996, 97 and 98 ... An All- ACC first team selection in 1996 and second- team member in 1998 ...
