Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
Opening statement:
"Georgia Tech is one of those teams that has gotten better over the year. I was really impressed by their effort tonight. They really came after us with a lot of people. It was a good win against a good team."
On Maryland's rebounding advantage:
"Part of defense is rebounding. I was really pleased with the way we went after the glass tonight. There were not many rebounds that were not at least contested by us. We did a better job this time keeping control of the ball against Georgia Tech. "
On Maryland's sixth straight 20-win season:
"I'll think about it when the season is over. I'm proud of this team. It's not like we snuck up on anybody. I think the expectations were higher on this year's team than last year's team. To see them handle it has been interesting for me as their coach."
On the Maryland-Duke rivalry:
"This why you're a college basketball player -- why you go to the ACC -- to play games like this. You can't get these kind of games at every school. You can get them here, though. If this isn't exciting, then something's wrong either as a player, coach or fan."
Georgia Tech Head Coach Paul Hewitt
Opening statement:
"We got beat by a strong, physical team tonight. With 22 offensive boards tonight, it begins and ends there. It's tough to beat anybody [with that deficit on the offensive glass], especially a team the caliber of Maryland."
On Maryland's offensive rebounding advantage:
"I'm not sure what the numbers were the last time we played them, but I don't think they had 22 offensive rebounds. It's just too difficult. We needed to keep them somewhere around 12 to 15 offensive rebounds. It takes too much energy to get the ball back and try and get your transition game going if you give them that many offensive rebounds."
On the play of Tony Akins:
"I thought he did a good job of distributing the ball. Obviously, he's going to get a lot of attention from anybody we play. Over the last couple of years he's done a nice job of picking his spots and distributing the ball and also creating shots for himself. He has had a great year and I am disappointed for him that the season is going the way it is, but I have no complaints with his game."
On the difficulty of playing at Cole Field House:
"I love the building. It's got a lot of character and obviously tradition, but it's more the players and the coach. Once you have those ingredients, the atmosphere comes alive."
