Maryland vs. NC State: Postgame Notes

Feb. 3, 2002

Recap| Box Score| Quotes

  • Maryland's 89-73 win gives the Terrapins (No. 3 USA Today/ESPN/No. 3 AP) an 8-1 record to open conference play. Besides 2001-02, the 1979-80 season was only other time the Terps were off to as good a start in the league, beginning ACC play 9-1 en route to the regular-season title at 11-3.

  • The victory puts Maryland on a five-game win streak and extends the Terrapins' 2001-02 Cole Field House win streak to 11 (14 in all dating to last season), marking the longest season-opening home court victory stretch since the 1994-95 Terps went 16-0 at home.

  • The Terrapins have now won 11 of the last 12 meetings with the Wolfpack, the last six tilts overall, and the last 13 match-ups with NC State in Cole Field House. Head coach Gary Williams has led the Terps to the home success over the conference rival, as Maryland has not lost to NC State at home since Jan. 29, 1989 (the season prior to Coach Williams' arrival).

  • Senior Naismith and Wooden awards finalist Juan Dixon scored a game-high 27 points, and contributed four steals to move up on the NCAA all-time steals chart. Now totaling 311 for his career, Dixon ranks 20th all-time, surpassing LSU's Clarence Caesar, UConn's Scottie Burrell and local standout Shawnta Rogers of the George Washington University. All were tied for 20th with 310 career steals.

  • Juan Dixon scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half, totaling 25 or more points for the sixth time this season and the 16th of his career. He has scored 20 points or more in 34 different games.

  • Juan Dixon finished the game 5-of-8 (.625) from 3-point range, tying his single-game career high at five. Dixon has registered five 3-pointers in a single game on eight other occasions during his Maryland tenure.

  • Senior Naismith and Wooden awards finalist Lonny Baxter scored in double-figures for his sixth straight game, and is averaging 17.4 points over the last seven games. He finished the game 6-of-9 (.667) from the field.

  • Junior point guard Steve Blake collected 12 points, which included a 2-of-5 (.400) effort from beyond the 3-point arc. Blake's new career 3-point total of 101 moves him into an eighth-place tie with former teammate Terence Morris (1998-2001) on the Maryland all-time chart.

  • Swingman Byron Mouton registered 13 points in the contest, marking the ninth game of double-figure scoring for the senior in his last 13. He finished the game 6-for-10 (.600) from the floor and also contributed four assists and six rebounds as part of an excellent all-around effort.
