COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland starter Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts as the Terps downed Vermont, 9-3, for their 11th straight victory. The streak of 11 consecutive wins ties a school record and the team's 13-2 record equals the best start in school history.
Schmoll (1-2) was brilliant as he limited the Catamounts to no runs on three hits in five innings of work. He walked just one batter while racking up the 10 strikeouts.
The Terrapins took advantage of nine Vermont errors on the day to score five unearned runs.
In the first, junior John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) reached on an error and stole second before scoring when senior Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) stroked a RBI-single to right.
In the second, Maryland scored another two runs, both unearned, to stretch the lead to 3-0. McCurdy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and junior Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) scored on an error.
Maryland scored another unearned run in the fourth and scored its first two earned runs of the game in the fifth. Freshman Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) lined a RBI-double down the right field line to score the two runs to push the lead to 6-0.
In the sixth, Maryland scored two more runs to make the score 8-0. McDonald drove in his second run of the game with a RBI-single and Whitmer scored on a wild pitch.
Vermont finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh with three runs, but it was too little, too late.
The Terps added a run in the bottom of the eighth on McCurdy's team-leading ninth home run of the season down the right field line.
Maryland improved to 13-2 with the victory while Vermont fell to 0-3. The Terps will look to set a new school record with their 12th consecutive victory Tuesday vs. Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Shipley Field.
