COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Freshman catcher Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) drilled two home runs and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as Maryland downed Georgetown, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon at Shipley Field. It was the first multiple home run game for Maxey as the Terps set a new school record with their 12th straight victory.
The Terrapins scored twice in the first inning when junior John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) singled to score senior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) to give Maryland a quick 1-0 lead. Sophomore Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) added a RBI-double to score McCurdy and put Maryland up 2-0.
McCurdy drove in his second run of the contest in the third with a RBI-single to center to score junior Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) and make the score 3-0.
In the fourth, Maxey blasted his first home run of the game over the fence in left center to score junior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.). Later in the inning, Swope drove in freshman Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) with a RBI-single to right to give Maryland a 6-0 lead.
Maxey connected on his second home run of the game, a solo shot, in the fifth to extend the Maryland advantage to 7-0.
The Hoyas and Terrapins each added a run in the eighth inning to close out the scoring at 8-1.
Five Terrapin pitchers combined to hold Georgetown to just one run on seven hits. Maryland starter Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) earned the win after pitching two innings and allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Three Maryland players had three hits on the day including Maxey. McCurdy went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three stolen bases while Swope was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. McCurdy also became the first Maryland player to steal three bases in one game since Eric Beer swiped three vs. Coppin State on April 29, 1999.
The Terrapins are now 14-2 with the win while Georgetown fell to 5-15. Maryland returns to action Wednesday vs. Coppin State at Shipley Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
