HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - The University of Maryland men's golf team was denied the opportunity to rebound from a tough first day of competition when today's third round of the Birkdale Collegiate Classic was canceled due to inclement weather. The Terps shot a two-round total of 612 (310-302) to finish in 15th place in their first tournament of the spring season.
Wake Forest, ranked No. 3 by the Golf Coaches Association and Golfweek, claimed the tournament title with a six-under-par total of 570 (281-289). The Demon Deacons claimed a two-shot victory over second-place Missouri and finished four shots ahead of Georgia Southern and Virginia.
In his first collegiate spring tournament, freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) claimed the Terps' top individual score with a 25th-place finish. His two-round total of 145 (75-70) was highlighted by a four-under-par performance on Birkdale Golf Club's par-five holes. His second-round 70, one of the lowest scores in the field's second round, was the Terps' only sub-par score.
The Terps' other four golfers all finished within two shots of each other. Sophomore Tim Kane shot 78-77--155 and tied for 69th place. Senior Corey Brigham (78-78-156) tied for 72nd place while junior John Moheyer and senior Pete Toole tied for 80th place after totaling 157.
Wake Forest's Bill Haas won the tournament's individual title with his two-round total of 66-72--138. His six-under-par total was one shot better than the second-place finishers, Old Dominion's Geoffrey Harris and Virginia's Steve Marino.
The Terps continue their season-opening back-to-back set when they return to action Monday with the first day of competition at the Cleveland Golf Championships in Aiken, S.C.
