COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Junior pitcher Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) pitched seven strong innings to lead Maryland past Brown, 9-1, Friday afternoon in college baseball action at Shipley Field. Ainsworth (4-1) allowed just one run and scattered seven hits, to go along with seven strikeouts, for his fourth win of the season.
The win for Maryland was its 12th straight this season at Shipley Field as the Terrapins improved to a perfect 12-0 at home with the win. The victory raised the Terps' record to 17-5 while Brown fell to 5-3. The 17 wins for Maryland equal the entire total that the team won last season.
The Terrapins pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon including three by senior center fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.). Swope just missed hitting for the cycle, as he had a single, double and triple to go along with four RBIs for the winners.
Maryland scored once in the third inning while Brown scored once in the fourth before the Terps blew the game open. The Terps would add two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth on a solo home run by freshman Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) to take a 4-1 lead. The long ball was Frazier's eighth of the season.
The Terps put the game away by scoring five runs in the seventh inning to close out the scoring at 9-1. The Terrapins had five hits in the inning and took advantage of two Brown errors for the big five-run frame.
Along with Swope's three hits, junior right fielder Jonny Bass (Charlotte Hall, Md.) also had three hits for the Terps. Bass set a career-high by going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
The Terrapins will look to extend their home winning streak to 13 Tuesday vs. Howard. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
