ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Junior RHP Derek Hoffman (Hagerstown, Md.) tossed a career-high six innings and held Navy to just one unearned run on three hits to lead Maryland past the Midshipmen, 8-4, Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis. Hoffman fanned five to win his third game of the year and improve to 3-0 for the Terrapins.
The Terrapin offense gave Hoffman five runs over the first two innings to give the 6-8 righthander plenty of run support. In the first, Maryland's first five hitters reached base including a two-run double by designated hitter Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.), a RBI-single by first baseman Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) to give the Terps a 4-0 advantage.
Navy scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first before the Terps added another run in the second to extend the lead to 5-1. Center fielder Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) scored an unearned run on a throwing error by Navy pitcher Steven Goocey.
Maryland added another single run in the sixth and two in the ninth while the Mids added one run in the seventh and two in the ninth to close out the scoring at 8-4.
Maryland third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) led the Terrapin attack as he tied a career-high with three hits after finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
With the victory, the Terps won their second straight game and improved to 24-14 on the year while Navy dropped to 12-21. Maryland returns to action this weekend on the road at No. 6 Wake Forest. The series opener starts Friday at 3 p.m. at Hooks Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
