BETHESDA, Md.- Senior rightfielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Maryland to a convincing 12-2 victory at Georgetown Tuesday night in Bethesda, Md.
The Terrapins jumped on the Hoyas early by scoring four two-out runs in the top of the second. Junior leftfielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) drove in the Terps' first run with a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Swope followed with a bases clearing double down the left field line to put Maryland up 4-0.
In the third, Georgetown pitchers issued three straight two-out walks to load the bases. Hoya third baseman Bill Quinn then committed a fielding error when freshman centerfielder Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) hit a slow roller to score the Terps' fourth run of the contest.
The Hoyas scored once in the home half of the third when centerfielder Carlos Gazitua drove in a run on a fielder's choice to cut the Maryland lead to 5-1.
In the fourth, sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) singled through the right side to score two runs to give Maryland a 7-1 lead.
Maryland kept the pressure on as the Terps scored another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 8-1. After a leadoff double by junior second baseman Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.), Maxwell drove him in with a RBI-single to center on a 1-2 count for the Terps' eighth run of the night.
In the Terrapin sixth, Maxwell drove in his second run of the game with a RBI-double to center to give Maryland a 9-1 lead.
Georgetown scored one run in the sixth and Maryland added one run in the seventh and two in the ninth to close out the scoring at 12-2.
Maryland reliever Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) improved to 3-2 on the season after tossing two innings for the victory.
The Terps are now 28-19 on the season while Georgetown fell to 9-43 with the loss. The Terps will look to tie the school record for wins in a single-season tomorrow at UMBC. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Alumni Field.
