COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland women's tennis fell to top ranked Duke, 6-1. The Blue Devils are ranked fourth nationally and improve to 17-3 and 4-0 against ACC opponents. The Terps drop to 9-7 and 1-3 in the ACC. Junior Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) notched the only win for Maryland on the day.
Maryland lost all three doubles matches to Duke. At No. 1 doubles, junior Delila Causevic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) fell to Duke's Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams. Despite being down 3-6 in the match, McCain and Adams mustered out a 9-7 win. At No. 2 doubles, Maryland's freshman Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.) and Jedrzejak, were defeated by Julie Deroo and Amanda Johnson, 8-4. Senior Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) and sophomore Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France) fell 8-3, to Duke's Katie Granson and Susie Abromeit.
On the singles end, the Blue Devils overpowered the Terps. At No. 1, McCain defeated Causevic, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Floro was eliminated by DeRoo, 6-3, 7-5. DeCamilla and Chavardes faced straight sets losses as well. Team captain Marker dropped in three sets, including a second set tiebreaker to Johnson. The match between Marker and Johnson lasted for a little over two hours.
However, at No. 4 singles, Maryland's Jedrzejak was able to hold her ground and come out with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 win over Ioana Plesu. Jedrzejak's win secured Maryland its only point of the day.
The Terps host ACC opponent, North Carolina at 2 p.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park, tomorrow.
