CHICAGO -
The three-day NBA draft camp in Chicago has concluded, with Maryland seniors Lonny Baxter and Byron Mouton among the camp's top stars. A post-tournament statistical index (view the complete index and final statistics) measuring a player's all-around effectiveness resulted in Baxter being scored as the camp's second-best player.
Baxter led all scorers and rebounders, with 55 points and 27 rebounds in three games, and an all-around index score of 58. He had 30 points in 12 rebounds in a stellar second day performance which earned him billing as the camp's best player of the day while earning a narrow overtime victory over Team 3. Baxter's team finished undefeated with the former Terrapin scoring in double figures in all three games.
The only player with a higher index rating was Villanova's Brooks Sales who finished with 34 points, 22 rebounds, eight assists and a 61 index score.
Teaming with Sales on Team 3 in the camp was former Terp Mouton whose 39 points were 11th overall in the tournament. He shot 16-of-27 from the floor in three games, and like Baxter, tallied double digits in all three games that he played.
Both Terps will enter the NBA draft which takes place at Madison Square Garden on June 26. Together with Maryland teammates Chris Wilcox and Juan Dixon, Maryland hopes to have four players drafted for just the second time in its history (1981). It would be the first time that four Maryland players would be chosen in the draft's first two rounds.
The only time that Maryland has ever placed three players in the first two rounds was in 1999 when Steve Francis was chosen second overall, and Obinna Ekezie and Laron Profit were picked back-to-back with the 37th and 38th picks of the draft.
The last time that Maryland had two players selected in the first round was in 1981 when Buck Williams (#3) and Albert King (#10) both were picked by the New Jersey Nets. Ernest Graham (third round, Philadelphia) and Greg Manning (7th round, Denver) were selected later in the same draft.
The only other time that Maryland had two first-round draft picks was in 1974 when Tom McMillen (Buffalo) and Len Elmore (Washington) were chosen 9th and 13th, respectively.
