COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Quarterbacks Scott McBrien and Chris Kelley combined to completed 19 of 29 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns to highlight University of Maryland's first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday evening.
McBrien was 10 of 16 for 142 yards and one touchdown while Kelley completed nine of 13 passes for 103 yards and one score. Kelley also led all ballcarriers with 34 yards on four carries.
"I think we got out of this scrimmage just what we wanted," said second-year Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen. "We went a little longer than I wanted, but I'm trying to give these quarterbacks as much experience as they can get, yet holding my breath hoping we wouldn't get anybody hurt."
The Terps got through the near 90-minute outing without suffering any major injuries.
"I think the intensity was good and the hitting was good, and after seven days of two-a-days, that says a lot for the team and its character," said Friedgen. "I'm encouraged, but we still have a ways to go yet. We have to stop putting the ball on the ground - we had three fumbles and three fumbled snaps today. If that happens in a game, it will be doomsday. We won't beat anybody doing that."
Slot receiver Steve Suter continued his impressive play this fall, making a pair of tough sideline catches among his three receptions. Receivers Latrez Harrison and Derrick Fenner along with tight end Jeff Dugan also had three catches apiece. Slot receiver Rich Parson had a pair of catches for 69 yards, including a touchdown. True freshman Dan Melendez had a touchdown on an 11-yard scoring play.
"On both sides of the ball I think we had only two penalties, which is encouraging for so early in the year," said Friedgen. "We made progress today. Now we have to go back to work tomorrow, correct our mistakes and move on."
